@OccupyColleges is asking for followers & to help get the word out. They've been helped by Mike Moore and Greenwald but could use more. :hi:

5. Yeah, school walk outs don't really work |
|
Far too many people are afraid to do anything. I would think that the maximum amount of college students that will participate in this is less than 5%. So what happens when 2 students walk out of a classroom? The professor usually counts them as absent, which can mean a lowered grade.
This movement is getting unfocused and it brings it down. The protests at sites across the country are good because you aren't able to see the amount of people NOT participating. When you attempt a school walkout where a very small minority participate, you draw attention to the fact that most students did not participate. Thus, belittling the movement.
What if there is an exam going on? Are you willing to flunk your midterm and possibly the entire course? Some might, but most will not. I think a better solution would be to organize campus protests similar to what is happening on Wall Street instead of this walkout.
Remember the walkout to support the Wisconsin protests? Exactly, nobody does because very few participated. I don't like the walkout idea one bit.

6. They worked just fine for ending Apartheid and in Egypt. |
|
Remember Egypt? That revolution went forward because of the unions and the students.

8. Those weren't walkouts though, they were real protests |
|
I'm with them in principal, but I dont like the idea of a walkout. Like I said before, very few students will participate and most will just focus on the vast majority that did not participate.
And think about the students who are less likely to walkout; they are the ones that are so concerned with their grades that they don't want to risk it. Many will look at this as the smart kids stayed in class while the dumb kids walked out. It's not true, but I think that's what a lot of people will take away from it.

9. This will be a point of entry for a lot of people. |
|
And there's no reason to take a ding in grades. You just make up the work and notify your professor.

14. I wish my professors would have made exceptions like you say |
|
I know that most of mine would not. Economics professors usually aren't for protest movements anyways. If I walked out of a class, I would have likely been penalized.

and extra work for themselves. If you arrange to get someone's notes and the assignment and show them you are considerate of them in that way, that goes a long way with most instructors.

17. Depends on the professor -- can't assume they'll be understanding. |
|
Some may be sympathetic; others may not, and that could be costly. I remember when I was in college there were some profs who were so punitive about students taking off on traditional "no school" days (as in student-determined traditional, such as St. Patrick's Day, the day before a big basketball game, etc.) that there was no wriggle room -- none whatsoever.
My kid, for instance, cannot take a chance on doing this if she doesn't want to risk screwing up her financial aid. She needs her classes, and she needs her grades. For those like her who can't take part in this but still want to voice their opnions, there should be other outlets to do so.

18. It's likely illegal for a student to be punished for exercising their |
|
free speech rights in this way, and if the student doesn't miss any work, groundless. A professor's political opinions shouldn't be an issue.
And of course participation is only limited by her imagination, if this isn't a fight she can take on.

12. You were not at university in the 70's, methinks. |
|
Actually, at my university, walking out was 50-50 idea until our professor said he would flunk ANYONE who supported the anti war marches. We ALL walked out of his class.
My favorite prof walked out another class with us.

13. No, I wasn't. But I don't think we are close to the mindset of the 70s yet |
|
And honestly, I think some of that has to do with the cost. Walking out of class is a risk, and if you are paying for school on your own or with loans, you might not want to make a $1,000 risk to protest.
People were also much more politically involved at that time. I just finished my graduate work a few years ago, and I just don't see students taking part in this yet. First of all, there are still a lot of people that don't know what OWS is. Secondly, there are a lot of college students that don't care what OWS is.
I would like this to work, but I'm just trying to be realistic by saying that definitely less than 10% will do this.

20. I was at Cal in the late 80s, 90s, on both sides of the podium. |
|
You are right about the financial risk. The deal is, people at that age can figure out for themelves what is important and how to make it work or not.
But this opportunity doesn't come around very often. We haven't had this mood in this country since 1968.

My kids didn't see anything on their campuses today, so I wonder where some big walkouts might have happened.
