America's Most Dangerous Cities, 2011

A city where murder is nearly a daily occurance stands a good shot of being named the most violent, crime-prone area in the country. And last year there were 345 murders reported in the Detroit metropolitan area - altogether 1,111 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

To compile our list of America’s most dangerous cities, we used the FBI’s uniform crime report for 2010, which tallies crime data for each of the country’s metropolitan statistical areas, regions that usually consist of a large city and its suburbs or nearby cities. Because small fluctuations in crime numbers can produce outsize jumps in rates in smaller metropolitan areas, we looked at MSAs with a population of 200,000 or more. We used the FBI’s numbers for four categories of violent crimes: murder and non-negligent manslaughter; forcible rape; robbery; and aggravated assault.

3. Bunk data: for example, the FBI crime stats show 27,702 crimes for the "Detroit-Warren-Livonia, MI"
Edited on Tue Oct-04-11 06:25 PM by Romulox
16,976 of those took place in the City of Detroit. Only 770 of them in Warren, 152 in Livonia, and 373 in Dearborn. So it is laughable to refer to the crimes occurring in "Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn, MI Metropolitan District". :hi:

4. Three hundred and forty-five?
If I might be so bold as to opine, that number seems rather small for a major American city. No offence intended here. Merely one man's view.

5. And Detroit-Warren-Livonia isn't a metro area.......it's three cities in a larger metro area.
Edited on Tue Oct-04-11 06:28 PM by marmar
Where did they get that 1.8 million population figure from? The Detroit metro area's population is about 5 million. Did they shear off 2/3 of the population to make the crime stats sexier?
What a banquet of bullshit.

6. Surprised that Atlanta was not on the top of the list.
We have murders, rapes, hit and runs and drive-by shootings every day.

8. NOLA didn't even make the top ten?
This list is suspect, I think. Unofficial total is 146 murders so far for 2011, 192 predicted.

10. They looked at violent crime in total
NOLA has a murder problem, but other violent crimes are around the national average.
