I found and bought a pair of American made work boots yesterday!
I usually try to buy American made products, but find it hard to find things like clothing and shoes that aren't made outside the country. I have now discovered Thorogood brand work shoes. The pair I bought seem very well made, and were actually a few dollars less in price than the boots made in China next to them on the shelf. I used to buy Red Wing and Carolina boots, but those brands are now made overseas. If anyone knows of any other American made boots, I would like to know.

9. I went into a Red Wing store a couple of years ago......
because I needed to buy a pair of steel toe work shoes.

I went in specifically looking to buy a pair made in the USA.

The cheapest pair made in the USA they sold were well over $100.00. Closer to $150.00, if I remember correctly.

Red Wing does indeed have American made work shoes. Unfortunately, they were out of my price range when I needed them.

15. They are well worth the price.
I've been in construction for over 20 years and one thing I trust in are my Red Wings. They last over a year, you can replace the soles and they give a Union discount. When I first started in the business I would buy cheaper boots and they would never last and had a long break-in period. I went to Red Wings and have never turned back. You'll buy three pairs of inferior boots for every one pair of Red Wings.

23. Red Wing's guarantee and service cannot be beat
I have a pair that were "custom made" for me (they are offered in my size, but no one had actually ordered a 5, and this model is hand-made) that were very reasonably priced, quite attractive and very comfortable. My husband wears an unusual size as well - B width - and the local shop found the last pair in his size/width in the style he wanted. Free laces for life, most styles can be resoled forever, and made very, very well.

Neither one of us work construction, but we do wear the hell out of our shoes - and for boots that will see wear and work, I think it's better to spend the extra $50 or so for boots that won't wear out (judging from the customers coming in when we were there, the soles might need replacing once in a while, but the rest if the boot lasts forever).

SNOW boots for women...not fancy high-heeled boots. I want to be WARM. I got some from Canada....Kamik....and then they moved to China.

And those silly Ugs cost a fortune and they're made in China, but the owner is from Australia.

Those are some ugly boots. Nothing like the pull-ons from Canada. WTF?

Oh well....maybe I can design for this firm.

4. It's worth spending money on a good pair of workboots
If well made, they will last decades, and many soles.

I don't rightly know these days where the hell to get shoes re-soled.

5. Those shoe
repair folks are out there...you just have to look.

I understand....I'm :hippie: as well....thankfully! I bought a pair of black 2" heels by Charles Jordan (Chucky J) decades ago. They were the only comfortable heels I could find. I had them repaired twice. Still got 'em. Shoes aren't made like they used to be.

Of course, we could travel to Italy and find amazing shoes and purses. The US isn't allowed to import from there...must be from China. Well...that's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

I use toe warmers in the winter....so toasty.

6. Red Wings? They are made up the road from me.
They have two plants, both running here in the midwest.

If they are importing crap from China, I will be de-pressed.

10. They are.
Go into a Red Wing store.

Many of the styles they sell with "Red Wing" labels on them are made in China.

8. Danner is still made here. But they are pricey.
Edited on Wed Oct-05-11 12:02 AM by bengalherder
Some Red Wing models still are but they are twice as much as the imports.

There is another company, a friend of mine who was doing lineman work bought a pair, they are made in Oregon and will recondition the boots for you when you need it. They aren't cheap, bu they are custom built. I don't remember the name, but hopefully googling 'Oregon custom boots' might yield something.

He swears by those boots and has had them for something like 4 years now. they look like new.

PS I live in my boots. Right now, mine await re-soling while I wear cheap shoes and my arches ache from the hours working needed to afford it. (sigh)

11. I buy Wesco boots. Kind of pricey, but very well made.
My work boots cost me $450 with tax, but IMO they are worth it.

100% American owned and made since 1918.

These are awesome boots!

21. I get regular emails from Roger Simmermaker: "How Americans Can Buy American":
Edited on Wed Oct-05-11 04:54 PM by BrendaBrick
The latest one dated 10-1-2011 included this, in part:

· Did you know Irish Spring is American owned, but Dial is owned by a German company?

· Did you know Revlon is American owned, but Maybelline is owned by the French?

· Did you know Lipton is owned by a company called Unilever, which is a joint venture between England and the Netherlands? And Unilever owns such popular brands Q-Tips, Ragu pasta sauce, Wish-Bone salad dressing, and Hellmann’s mayonnaise?

His site: http://www.howtobuyamerican.com/index.php

Also, Diane Sawyer did a Made in America segment earlier this year and more recently, something about a catalog some universities sent to students to purchase products...and NOT ONE PRODUCT was Made in USA. I try to buy American when I can and also purchase from local businesses instead of chains.

You would think that Made in USA stickers/shelf tags on store shelves would be more prevalent than it is ~
