1. For good and sufficient reason at the time...
...six years ago I signed up with a commercial bank from a credit union.

And those good and sufficient reasons came true when I was forced to rather abruptly move to Connecticut from Minnesota.

In fact, I benefited when Wells Fargo bought Wachovia, because it means that by the time I got out here the place was littered with WF banks and ATMs.

They haven't been jerks to me, but at the same time I haven't done more than have a checking account with them.

19. Where's the "Community Bank" option? ...
I make a distinction between large commercial banks like Chase and local community banks.

Haven't really felt the urge to change. I figure "let the big bank deal with my piddling account for now".

10. I seriously love my credit union, but I don't know if "Where do you make love?" works, either...
Having trouble finding the appropriate verb. Maybe I should email CUNA tomorrow.

3. Credit Union.
Since 1987. Started with JSC-FCU (Johnson Space Center Federal Credit Union) and ended up at one started by employees of an oil-tool company :)

Or is that the "other" option.

28. Yeah, that's why I chose the "other"...
I bank at a smaller community bank, and two credit unions

6. Both but I'm not in love with Chase, the people working there look out..
for me as they worked there before there new overlords came to power. They have fixed some charges & fees more than a few times for their old customers.

8. Yeah, I went to a Credit Union when Chase bought Wamu
The people that worked at Wamu were pretty nice, but I hate Chase. They were pretty sneaky with the way they instituted a monthy fee - almost as if they were trying to catch people unawares who had left unclosed accounts with Wamu. If I hadn't of opened *that* particular bit of junk-mail from Chase they would have dinged me both with their new fee AND a hefty overdraft.

9. A few years ago I got laid off for a long (for me) time.
I had been pulling every rabbit out of every hat I could think of to keep the bills paid but I had finally run out of rabbits. I called my credit union and explained that I simply did not know how I was going to make my payments to them for my car loan or my credit card. Know what they told me? Skip the payments for the next two months and call us when things get better. Try that at Bankster of America! I love my credit union! Things did get better and we are square now but if I had been dealing with someone like Shitty bank they could have really fucked me up.

I was wondering if that happened in a small town, where people might have more tendency to trust other people.

17. Sadly, my CU sucks
Used to have an account with them; honest to god, I've had better customer service from Verizon. Just awful.

We use two banks. We have a vanilla checking account with BoA because it's free (we'll see if that lasts) and we like the convenience of ubiquitous ATMs. But we do all our other banking (savings, loans, other products like insurance) with USAA, which just might be the greatest company on earth.

21. Wells Fargo has treated me pretty well, and since my ex-wife has jacked up my credit score...
...it would be very hard for me to refinance the large equity line I have there.

The snafu involves a credit card at Bank of America that has me (in computer records) as a joint account holder. I didn't know about the card until over 10 years after my divorce was final. Just yesterday I discovered that my flaky, dimwit ex has defaulted on the card. Now my credit reports show a 60-day default - The first default ever to appear in my credit history.

The bottom line is that my ex failed to comply with the terms of our divorce, by neglecting to close the joint card. I will get it straightened out, but now it's going to require a court order.

25. I agree, mine is a regional bank, but I love it
Huntington is great. They have had a program where you get 24-hour overdraft protection for years now. That saved me a bunch of money in overdraft fees when I was in college. They also have never pulled the sneakiness of pushing large items through first like so many other banks do in hopes of gaining more fees.

I had my wallet stolen a few years ago on a Friday night and did not realize it until Saturday morning. The bank closed at noon, I called at 12:30pm. She told me they were closed, but she would hang around so I could get a generic ATM card to use. I know that not many other banks have employees that would hang around after they close to help out a customer. Like I said before, I really like my bank.

26. USAA---one of the perks of being an army brat all those years...
of course--if the internet goes, I'm doomed...

It's funny when Geico and Progressive call -- all hepped up to sell me on their insurance rates. When they find I have USAA...you hear the wind go out of their sails...

27. I think we have 5 accounts right now -
not very much in any of them ... but we do split it to help with budgeting. I take care of household, my personal acct, and a savings acct. My husband has a personal checking and takes care of the "big" savings account (which is not very big truth be told). We have a mix of big bank, small bank, credit union, and online banks.

My grandfather used to bank in the smallest bank in town and kept a safe in the basement - he lived through the depression and warned not to keep all your money in one place.
