E-Receipts Could Present Privacy Risks
E-Receipts Could Present Privacy Risks

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There used to be a time when sales clerks would ask, “Paper or plastic?” Now, it’s, “Paper or email?”

Major banks, such as Wells Fargo, are emailing customers ATM slips, and the number of retail stores, including K-Mart, Sears, Banana Republic and Gap, offering customers electronic invoices is continuing to grow.

“More customers are opting to receive their receipts via email because it's saving on paper and it's also more convenient for them," said Shaleighne Murphy, who works for Alex and Ani jewelry.

...

Retail insiders confirm some businesses make big bucks by filling your inbox with offers -- and sometimes even selling your information.

"When you send a digital receipt you can see the person open it, you can see if they clicked on a subsequent offer," said Mark Johnson of Loyalty Marketers Association.

1. My email address, like my cell phone number, is not given out at any store.

2. Same here
If they have the nerve to ask me for my email address, I have the nerve to lie to their faces and say, "I don't have one."

Back in the days when Radio Shack used to ask your name to buy anything at all, even if you were paying cash, I'd just lie and tell them my name was Ralph Smith.

3. How do you prove ya bought the stuff when their 'security' accosts you in the parking lot?
If Costco does this, what about the job of the person that marks your receipt on the way out?

How do you stop the new unwanted spam?

4. Damn near everything presents a privacy risk.
I don't give my email to anyone.
