Wearing that letter A
(Cross posted from GLBT)

The largest remaining barrier to love in our world is the one our culture places before those who love others of their gender.

Furthermore, appearing in this issue is a religious column that caused our ownership some heartburn. We ran it even though it calls homosexuality "filthiness," and compares it to alcoholism, among other things. We don't stifle speech on the Monitor, but the fact that anyone believes things like that hurts.

This is not stuff that is built into being gay. It's stuff people choose to do to gay people. People choose to hurt others based on how they love.

I went to Seattle's gay pride parade for this first time this summer. Along with all the rainbow flags waving that day, I kept noticing that on some flags and banners, the familiar initials LGBT, which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered, occasionally included a new letter A. I wondered what that stood for.
