Brooklyn charter teachers want UFT representation

On October 4, educators at Fahari Academy Charter School announced that they have organized a union at the school and intend to join the United Federation of TeachersUnited Federation of Teachers.

The majority of educators signed union authorization cards indicating the need for a union at the school.

The pedagogical staff delivered a letter to the school’s Board and Executive Director, Catina Venning, detailing their vision of a school culture that fulfills the mission of the school and ensures the quality of the students’ education. In the letter, the teachers and staff explained their decision to join the UFT: “We believe that by establishing a collective voice within our school community, we will be in a better position to realize this mission and to provide our students with the best possible education to ensure that they become productive members of our society.”

Along with the letter to the school’s leadership, the UFT filed a formal petition with the board of trustees and notified the state Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) that Fahari teachers are seeking union recognition. If the board does not voluntarily recognize the union within 30 days, the UFT can petition PERB to certify the collective-bargaining unit on the basis of the authorization cards.
