Elizabeth Warren: "The people on Wall Street broke this country"
Edited on Wed Oct-05-11 12:38 PM by mod mom
Elizabeth Warren Blasts Wall Street, Scott Brown In First Massachusetts Senate Debate

-snip

America's middle class has been hammered, squeezed and chipped at for a generation now, and it can't take it much longer," she added. "This is what I work on. This is my life's work. I've done research on it, I've written about it, I've advocated for these families. When we hit a financial crisis I went to Washington to try to work on the bank bailout and bring some transparency and accountability to it," she said.

-snip

Warren also drew applause for her tough talk on Wall Street. "The people on Wall Street broke this country, and they did it one lousy mortgage at a time. It happened more than three years ago, and there has been no real accountability, and there has been no real effort to fix it. That’s why I want to run for the United States Senate," she said.

When asked how she would react if one of her children joined the military, she said: "This is not a hard question for me. All three of my brothers served in the military and I, in fact, have urged my children, or one of my children, to consider it. He chose not to. But I believe that military service is a real alternative, and it’s an alternative for a career for some, and it’s an important opportunity to be part of America for others, so my answer is, yes, absolutely."

1. She good

I think she is great because she just tells it like it is.

I absolutely LOVED her response when they were calling her a Harvard elitist or something. She didn't run from that, she carried it with pride and her response was masterful.

16. But you can't blame her for giving that answer
not that there is anything wrong with her answer, but the blame is on the mediator
asking a military question and this is exactly the reason why this country has
become over reliant on the military and more funds are being generated to
weapons manufacturers with the hope that more wars can be started.

All this is done by these tiny questions being included in debates.

31. You missed the point of the question and her answer.
Edited on Wed Oct-05-11 03:49 PM by Mass
The question was whether she would advise her kids to go to the military. Most people said they would support their kids if they took the decision, but Warren was the only one, I think, saying she would (and had) advised one of her kids to do so. She was in fact the only one to say it was an easy question.

I dont think this disqualify her, but I also see no reason to believe she was not sincere, and I think it was a valid question.

74. Oh I am not saying she was wrong in answering the question
my point is the question being included in the debate, her answer is superb and
asking her about her kids doing military service does not relate to constituents
everyday life. The challenges they have to go through on a daily bases.

1934: The Plot Against America

BY Scott Horton
PUBLISHED July 28, 2007
I’m back from the land of heather and thistles, not to mention wee drams and lukewarm ale, but on my way out a friend at the BBC alerted me to this, a not-to-miss program on the BBC this morning, accessible over the next several days by internet. It’s the story of the Plot Against America. I don’t mean the Philip Roth novel, nor even the Sinclair Lewis book, It Can’t Happen Here, but rather the historical events upon which these two works of fiction were based.

In November 1934, federal investigators uncovered an amazing plot involving some two dozen senior businessmen, a good many of them Wall Street financiers, to topple the government of the United States and install a fascist dictatorship. Roth’s novel is developed from several strands of this factual account; he assumed the plot is actually carried out, whereas in fact an alert FDR shut it down but stopped short of retaliatory measures against the plotters. A key element of the plot involved a retired prominent general who was to have raised a private army of 500,000 men from unemployed veterans and who blew the whistle when he learned more of what the plot entailed. The plot was heavily funded and well developed and had strong links with fascist forces abroad. A story in the New York Times and several other newspapers reported on it, and a special Congressional committee was created to conduct an investigation. The records of this committee were scrubbed and sealed away in the National Archives, where they have only recently been made available.

The Congressional committee kept the names of many of the participants under wraps and no criminal action was ever brought against them. But a few names have leaked out. And one is Prescott Bush, the grandfather of the incumbent president. Prescott Bush was of course deep into the business of the Hamburg-America Lines, and had tight relations throughout this period with the new Government that had come to power in Germany a year earlier under Chancellor Aldoph Hitler. It appears that Bush was to have formed a key liaison for the group with the new German government.

Prescott Bush, of course, went on to service as a U.S. Senator from Connecticut, and his son, George H.W. Bush emerged from World War II as a hero.

The Whitehouse Coup
Monday 23 July 2007

The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell Hse & George Bush’s Grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression.

Mike Thomson investigates why so little is known about this biggest ever peacetime threat to American democracy.

14. "federal investigators uncovered an amazing plot" - They didn't discover it. Smedley Butler told
them about it. Another interesting factoid - A noted historian did a 3 volume "comprehensive" history of congressional hearings. The hearing that resulted from this attempted coup, was not in the book. I wonder why it was omitted?

13. I love Elizabeth Warren....but---
I am still very disappointed that Obama didn't put her in a position of power. She
wouldn't have been afraid of taking on Wall Street.

I am glad that we will have her in the Senate. However, she's just one decent, uncorrupted
Senators, in a sea of indecent, corrupted Senators. One righteous Senator, I fear, is ineffectual
at this point--against the corruption that has swallowed our entire government.

Am I happy that she's running for the Senate? Yes. I would like to see her use time in the Senate
to catapult herself to bigger things and really break this criminal system we now have.

It's like Dennis Kucinich. I love having him in Congress. However, he has no power. He is a voice
for us, but a quarterly fiery speech from the House floor--means nothing today.

We need people like Elizabeth Warren and Dennis Kucinich in cabinet positions or in power positions
where they can make big changes.

19. He put her in a position of power--the position to be able to run for the SENATE
This was discussed. There was concurrence. They took the long (and smart) view.

EW is a superstar. Have a look at this video--and if you cannot read the video, pay close attention to the transcript. She is in the RIGHT place at the RIGHT time.

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal/2011_09/the_underlying_social_contract032342.php

....I hear all this, you know, ‘Well, this is class warfare, this is whatever,’” she said. “No. There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody.

“You built a factory out there? Good for you. But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.

“Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea? God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”

I mention this for a few reasons. First, for those wondering why Warren has a strong base of supporters who adore her, this clip offers a big hint. Second, if there are lingering concerns about whether Warren could be an effective speaker on the stump, I think those questions are being answered.

And third, if more Democrats were able to make the case for the underlying social contract as effectively, our discourse would be vastly less mind-numbing.

See... a superstar!

42. One minor nitpick from a big fan...
Edited on Wed Oct-05-11 08:40 PM by onager
But I believe that military service is a real alternative, and it’s an alternative for a career for some...

Sigh. Military service is not an "alternative for a career," it IS a career. Snotty Brown will probaby call up some faux-butthurt Swift Boaters to whine about the way she phrased that. Oh well. Like I said, minor. But in the age of Faux News, sometimes nothing is minor. I hope this doesn't get blown up into "an attack on the military" or some BS.

I first noticed Warren in James Scurlock's great 2006 documentary, Maxed Out: Hard Times, Easy Credit and the Era of Predatory Lenders. If you've never seen it, take a look. I think you can watch the whole thing online. Scurlock was downright prophetic about the meltdown a couple years later.

Often I wonder what happened to the glitzy, whiz-bang Las Vegas realtor in the first scenes of the movie, Beth Naef. She was building a house in Vegas that cost, IIRC, $10 million. The bank gave her a huge loan based on the "future value" of the house, not actual value. Otherwise, Naef admitted on camera, she and her husband could never afford it.

Scurlock notes: "This is the same kind of accounting used by Enron..."

Elizabeth is just awesome, I've been a big fan of hers for years. If Obama had opened up his term like her, instead of going the route of Wall Street, he would be sitting pretty now.

What has been great the last couple of days is the surfacing of President Reagan talking like Warren Buffett....yu can bet that won't see the light of day at Faux News, no way, their idol talking all populist.

Let the occupation of US cities continue and grow, takin' it to the streets like in the 60s.

56. The fact is...the global economic planners are deliberately carrying out genocidal economic policies
Edited on Thu Oct-06-11 04:37 AM by Occupied1
The fact of the matter, and very harsh and unfortunate reality of this crisis, is that
the global economic central planners are deliberately carrying out genocidal economic
policies.

When tens of trillions of dollars deliberately flow to the top economic one-tenth of one
percent of the global population, while large percentages live in poverty, you have to
conclude, in technical terms, that a Neo-Feudal-Fascist state is upon us. The rich have
never been richer, while their paid off politicians make budget cuts for the poor and
middle class, and cause the cost of basic necessities to skyrocket.

You can call me extreme, but the reality of this is extreme, these people, the global
economic top one-tenth of one percent, are genocidal fascists carrying out a holocaust.
Fascism has evolved. There is no need to get blood on your hands while rounding up
people and putting them into concentration camps when you can do it through economic
policy while sitting in a jacuzzi on a corporate jet, or in a three-piece custom-made
Armani, completely detached and insulated from the world in which you plunder.

59. Marisa DeFranco?
wasn't she the older sister in the singing "DeFranco Family", who put out that teeny-bopper his "Heartbeat is a lovebeat" back in the 1970's?
