Should the Republicans use gladiatorial combat to select their future nominees?
The current Republican nomination process conflicts with the spirit of the Republican party. Using the spoken word to select the nominee creates a precedent for using the spoken word for other purposes, such as to negotiate with foreign governments. In other words, the current Republican nomination process is the thin end of the wedge. It threatens to do exactly what Eisenhower warned against in his farewell address:

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the peace-diplomacy complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

In addition, there can be little doubt that if the Republican party were to use gladiatorial combat to select their nominee, then they would gain a large and enthusiastic audience for their nomination process.

4. Yes, but it's an American tradition to run for office...
so instead of gladitorial combat, why not just throw them to the lions? Obviously the best runner would win and become the nominee, and they'd still maintain that large and enthusiastic audience.

5. Well, having them on a stage and trying to form words isn't working very well
so I imagine that might be a better way to do things.

Nothing turns people off faster than listening to one of those bozos outline his insane positions, demonstrating s/he knows absolutely nothing.
