FDA: Apple Juice Is Safe to Drink
FDA: Apple Juice Is Safe to Drink

Arsenic and apple juice. Not words you like to see in the same sentence.

There has been publicity recently over the amount of arsenic in the apple juice that many children drink.

But the Food and Drug Administration has every confidence in the safety of apple juice.

Donald Zink, Ph.D, senior science advisor at FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), explains that arsenic is present in the environment as a naturally occurring substance or as a result of contamination from human activity. It is found in water, air, food, and soil in organic and inorganic forms.

As a result, small amounts of arsenic can be found in certain food and beverage products—including fruit juices and juice concentrates.

“As a parent and grandparent myself, I understand the concern over recent reports that arsenic has been found in apple juice,” says Zink.

But, he says, there is no evidence of any public health risk from drinking these juices, Zink says. And FDA has been testing them for years.

1. Dr. Oz did a report on his show regarding arsenic in apple juice, regardless of the FDA.

2. Good to hear.
The benefits of consuming fresh fruits far outweigh any small amounts of things like arsenic. But too much consumption of juices adds to obesity, a health risk that far outweighs any small amounts of things like arsenic. So it's some good news and some bad news.

3. And most apple juice is made from apples grown in... China!
The apples are dehydrated and shipped as a powder to be rehydrated in the US. I have found that Mott's Naturals is grown in the US. It tastes much better than the cheap stuff made from what used to be apples.

5. I once emailed Motts to ask them where their apple juice comes from, was it imported from China
and their response went something to the effect that their concentrate comes from a variety of sources and all product is tested and has passed fed. regulation/whatever blah-blah-blah.

My take was they do indeed use apple juice concentrate from China, including the concentrate used in their kid's product line.

Nice, eh?
