The fundamental differences between OWS and the teabagger rallies. |
|
1. OWS is a genuine grass-roots event that has grown in the 3 weeks it has existed. Teabagger rallies are a few hours, attended by followers of some media talking head who orchestrates the event.
2. As OWS has grown, celebrities and authorities have followed. Teabagger rallies are essentially celebrity events where the sheep can see and repeat lines from their radio or TV idol.
3. In the 3 weeks of OWS, it has continued to grow and at the same time, has been spawning similar events in other cities across the U.S. Teabagger rallies have been sporadic flash-in-the-pan events that have been dwindling in attendance.
4. Persons attending OWS in New York are at the site of the root causes of this nation's economic problems--Wall Street--and are calling them out. Teabagger rallies are held to allow a bunch of bigots to express their racism and ignorance of the issues. Typically, they are attended at public and government facilities where attendees denounce government programs as they're collecting unemployment, Social Security, etc, and don't see the irony of the whole thing.
Anything to add? Feel free.

1. more on #2: OWS has deeply participatory decision-making |
|
where the Teabaggers look to a central authority--for the hour, for the day, for their "agenda. If you've been around them at one of these things, the difference in the way they relate to other human beings (as opposed to OWS) is palpable. It really is like people milling about in an auditorium waiting for the speaker to start. Cheering, insulting, holding up signs, sitting quietly--they truly take their cues for thinking and acting from an authority outside of themselves.

3. OWS has sent the TEAs right back to their "establishment" roots... |
|
They tried to portray themselves as revolutionaries - but notice how they recoil the minute somebody actually gets off their ass and does something.
