I've met more than one crackpot who has adamantly claimed that the United States was "founded by God". Have you ever asked a literalist Christian how the Bible can be the "Word of God", when it was written by men? The standard reply is that they were divinely inspired, and that their writing was directed by God himself.
As crazy as it sounds, there are quite a few Americans who believe the same thing about the founding of the United States. Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and the rest were acting under "God's direction", and fulfilling his will when they created this country.
They are certainly a minority, but it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that there are at least a few million people here who genuinely believe this stuff. I've had conversations with people who seemed to really believe that the Constitution was a divinely inspired Christian document.
