California Bans BPA in Baby Products
Governor Jerry Brown Signs Infants and Toddlers Act to Protect Children from BPA

Here is an excerpt from Betsy Butler's web site:

Landmark legislation to protect the health of children has been signed by Governor Jerry Brown. With the approval of the Toxin-Free Infants and Toddlers Act (AB 1319), authored by Assemblymember Betsy Butler (D-Marina del Rey), families from all communities will now have access to safe, non-toxic baby products as California joins ten other states and multiple counties in banning the toxic chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA) in baby products.

"After years of fighting to ban BPA, the health of our children has prevailed and California will finally join other states and countries in recognizing the significant danger this toxic chemical poses," said Assemblymember Butler. "Despite intense opposition, the parents, environmentalists and health advocates who fought to ban BPA knew they were on the right side of the issue and persevered. Together we overcame powerful interests to protect our future generations."

With the signing of AB 1319, California law will now prohibit the manufacture, sale or distribution of baby bottles and sippy cups that contain more than 0.1 parts per billion (ppb) of BPA.

BPA is an artificial hormone and endocrine disruptor widely used in shatter-proof plastic baby bottles and sippy cups. BPA leaches out of containers and into food and drink. It has been linked to a host of health problems, including early puberty, breast and prostate cancer, infertility, obesity and neurological and behavioral changes, including autism and hyperactivity.

This seems like a no-brainer. I mean, who was in favor of poisoning babies for profit? (Hint: their political organization begins with an "R".)

4. You're welcome!
I say that, pretentiously, on behalf of the State of California.

And thank you for the K&R. :)

5. Anyone holding a garage sale should not include
shatter-proof baby bottles and sippy cups with BPA.

Those items should be disposed of by sending them to Republicans who opposed the ban.

6. Thank you, Ma'am.
We in California are blessed with a Democratic governor and Democratic majorities in the legislature. That doesn't solve all our problems, but it helps.

7. So they are leaving it in other food containers, such as beer cans?

8. Since when do beer cans contain that chemical?
Are they lined with plastic?

9. Food and beverage cans have a coating on the inside that typically contains BPA
Bisphenol A has been known to be leached from the plastic lining of canned foods<145> and polycarbonate plastics, especially those that are cleaned with harsh detergents or those which contain acidic or high-temperature liquids. BPA is an ingredient in the internal coating of metal food and beverage cans used to protect the food from direct contact with the can. A recent Health Canada study found that the majority of canned soft drinks it tested had low, but measurable levels of bisphenol A.<146> Furthermore, A study conducted by the University of Texas School of Public Health in 2010, found BPA in 63 of 105 samples of fresh and canned foods, foods sold in plastic packaging, and in cat and dog foods in cans and plastic packaging. This included fresh turkey, canned green beans, and canned infant formula. <147> While most human exposure is through diet, exposure can also occur through air and through skin absorption.
