Are You One Of These 19 Million Americans?
Government aid from three programs kept 19 million Americans out of poverty last year.

Some day, it could be me who needs help, but not today.
I am very thankful not to be one of those 19 million, and I am equally thankful that they have avoided the worst through our support. It is worse than unfortunate that others have not gotten the help they so desperately need.

We could do so much better.

On edit: Welcome to DU.

11. You and me both
In something like 45 years of my working life, I've never gotten unemployment. I received "public assistance" (does that date me?) for about 3 months. That was only because my previous employer ripped off my UI when I told him I was going to leave to go back home. It was a real bitch hitching 20 miles in 0% temps to get to the county office with 50 mph winds trying to blow you back home.
It's not so much a "pitty poor me" story just an indication of what people will do to get by.
I'd never fault someone even if they crossed the line of legality just to get by.

You have to do what you have to do.

8. Christians and taxes
I have long wondered why so many so called Christians hate taxes so much. Then a couple of weeks ago the gospel equated prostitutes and tax collectors. I guess these people think that paying taxes is like supporting the world's oldest profession. They ignore one of the most important verses: whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren.... My brother thinks they have found something in the scriptures that indicates that they can take it with them.

10. I'm just poor
Nothing for me.

Not even food stamps.

But I can get a government subsidized cell phone for $1 per month.
