Afghani hearts and minds campaign turns to the U.S. |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-08-11 11:29 AM by Loge23
While watching the CBS News last night (10/07), I heard Scott Pelley sign off with a rather odd appraisal of our decade-long fiasco in Afghanistan. I wondered if this new spin on the Afghanistan "war" is a part of a new campaign designed to capture the hearts and minds not of the Afghani's, but of the Americans - many of whom have long since abandoned any hope of making any sense at all of our involvement in Afghanistan. Mr. Pelley signed off with a puff piece on how our military is building schools in Afghanistan. To paraphrase Pelley (I can't find a video of this piece): We now have a "new military" that is not focused on seizing land, nor building empires; but instead is building opportunities and schools, apparently for the countries we occupy. We need to be there was the message. We need to assure that our presence is understood as a humanitarian one. After ten years and untold billions (trillions?), thousands of lives lost, no end in sight nor no credible government formed; after the concurrent collapse of of own economy and the continued shift towards the influence of the economically elite in our society. Should we be happy that our military is now - allegedly - in the business of spreading Western culture to our occupied countries? This is OK, this is good??! What a crock. Mr. Pelley, you should be ashamed of yourself.
