“Poverty in America Week” October 7-14

Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West conducted a nine-state, 18-city tour to highlight the plight of poor people of all races, colors, and creeds so they will not be forgotten, ignored, or rendered invisible during this difficult and dangerous time of economic deprivation and political cowardice. For one full week beginning Friday, October 7 through Friday, October 14, Tavis will conduct conversations and share stories about our country’s greatest policy failure.

The tour inspiration

“I choose to identify with the underprivileged, I choose to identify with the poor, I choose to give my life for the hungry, I choose to give my life for those who have been left out of the sunlight of opportunity…This is the way I’m going. If it means suffering a little bit, I’m going that way. If it means sacrificing, I’m going that way. If it means dying for them, I’m going that way, because I heard a voice saying “DO SOMETHING FOR OTHERS.”
