That the establishment GOP, via groups like Freedomworks, and Fox News, would create a new brand for angry far right wing Republicans, the Tea Party.

They created it to increase turnout in the mid term elections. And it worked. The Tea Party elected Moderate Republicans as Govoners in MD, Virginia, and Scott Brown to the senate. In local races, some far right wing nuts also got elected, but that's because its easier to elect a nut in a very red district, much tougher to elect one at the state or federal levels.

Now, you should have noticed that the Tea Party is getting very little press promotion for their events. All of the AstroTurf money that started it, is being reduced so that the GOP establishment can reach a point where they keep the crazies riled up, but not so much that the pot can boil over completely.

The establishment GOP knows they created a monster, and their goal now is to keep it on a chain.

Kochtopus) are putting a lot of muscle into manipulating at the local level -- school boards, city councils, etc. (anti-union, anti-women's health care, anti-public education).

Their influence is subtle and increasingly inimical to civilization as we know it -- i.e. our Iowa governor refused to approve any increase at all for public education funding in the most recent budget (in a state that has always prided itself on its educated citizens) but succeeded in pushing through a huge increase in the amount of tax-deductible donation that can be made to religious schools.

He greased the way for taxpayers' funding of religious education by "promising" an increase for public education in next year's budget.

We'll see, won't we.

Sure, there are still GOP pols who think of themselves as the "Republican establishment," but those folks have been either co-opted, neutered or driven out of party leadership by the extreme right faction (which also goes by the name "Tea Party") to such an extent that considering them to be members of any "establishment" at all (except in historical terms) has been rendered nonsensical. Today's GOP establishment is its far right wing, a/k/a the Tea Party.
