you're the offspring of an illegal immigrant.

Some of my ancestors looked like that, some looked like the people holding guns to their heads.

Most of my ancestors (both Native and non-native people) came from Canada.

I'm rusty on Canadian history but I suspect it had a parallel track as America when it comes to indigenous people. I found this troublesome: http://www.examiner.com/exopolitics-in-seattle/mass-genocide-of-mohawk-children-by-uk-queen-and-vatican-uncovered-canada

In fact, that's a Mi'kmaq flag I have there under my screen name.
There are a couple of family names on my dad's side I can trace all the way back to France in the late 16th - early 17th Centuries.
Auclair...Roussel...Degre'...Guertin
One of my female ancestors came to Canada as a Filles du Roi.
I'm having a bit of trouble with my mom's side. Her mom had like six sisters, and her dad's origins are a bit sketchy. All I know is that a great grandfather and grandmother of my mom's lived in Maine, in Aroostook County, and may also have been of Mi'kmaq origin.
It's been so much fun discovering this stuff
:)

22. "Canada" is a false distinction. |
|
Since the border didn't exist before European occupation of the continent. The Name Canada bears this out, as it is derived from an Iroquoi word, a People whose territory spanned from Quebec to Kentucky.

23. That may be true, but... |

it's still a way to describe which tribes and which Europeans were most involved in the history of the area.

But if Columbus hadn't discovered America, then some native American would have discovered Europe.
THEN where would we be?

My blood ancestry is both Native American and "Pilgrim" ( circa 1640's) who still reside in Plymouth and Kingstown, MA.
St. Paddy's day also messes me up because I was adopted and raised by a completely Irish family, yet am Wiccan...
Your quote is beautiful.

16. The sins of my 11th great-grandfather are upon my head. |
|
Edited on Mon Oct-10-11 09:28 AM by HereSince1628
He and his band of disaffected buds were responsible for trading for land from the Montauk on eastern Long Island. Over time these illegal immigrants actually purchased the land, paying for it multiple times when the Montauk determined the original deal had been unfair. The novelty of 'buying' land and the multiple payments undoubtedly contributed to the notion that the original European families were just leasing. By the end of the 1600's the Europeans refused to pay when additional payments were sought.
A further complication of the nature of this land grabbing is what seems to be the disputed nature of the real estate claims among the pre-European inhabitants themselves. Although the Montauk sold the land to the Europeans it might not have been theirs to trade in the first place. At least the Narragansett tribe felt that way, and they went to war with the Montauk shortly AFTER the sale of the land to the Europeans.
