Cornel West: Herman Cain ‘needs to get off the symbolic crack pipe’
Source: Raw Story
By David Edwards

Princeton University professor Cornel West thinks Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain is wrong to suggest that racism no longer matters in this country.

Cain had told CNN’s Candy Crowley Sunday that some simply used racism as an excuse when they failed to achieve their goals.

“I have seen blacks in middle management move up to top management in some of the biggest corporations in America,” the candidate explained. “They weren’t held back because of racism. No, people sometimes hold themselves back because they want to use racism as excuse for them not being able to achieve what they want to achieve.”

Appearing on CNN Monday, West suggested Cain must be smoking something to think that racism no longer held back people of color.

1. Cain will probably learn a lot about racism at the Republican National Convention.

8. The reason republicans think all black people look the same is because they show the same black guy
at the RNC over and over and over again.

2. The tparty got mad at Herb for saying Perry's rock was insensitive. He walked back that statement,
and now he's adding extra helpings of bigotry to make them love him again.

3. Ouch.
Good thing it was West who said that; I don't know if some others could get away with that characterization.

Oh, right. I forgot. West is a loud mouthed "asshole" because he dares to challenge the president.

23. When you reveal yourself to be a psycho nutjob, I distance myself.
If only the reasonable people in the GOP had done that with the Teanutters, we might actually be doing something for the American people right now. Firebaggers, like West, don't impress me because they're in love the sound of their own voices & their own celebrity. Afterall, it gets them on the teevee so they can sell their tee-shirts and coffee mugs. Ugh... "Grifters" comes to mind.

24. And when did you notice that he was a "psycho nutjob?" Before or after he took on the president?
I've been reading and hearing West speak for over 20 years. He hasn't changed.

27. No, silly. If I knew you I wouldn't have to ask.
You noted that he "revealed himself to be a nutjob" which implies that you are aware of a time before that revelation. Your words, not mine.

28. He didn't "take on" Obama
He has decided to use some of the most revolting, bigoted, stupid, petty, asinine BS to disparage this president. And ALL he's done is make himself look like a fool in the process.

There is a reason that Cornel West has had his ass handed to him by just about every black thinker, writer and academic.

11. That occurred to me, too
Who says Cain's crack pipe is merely symbolic? Can Herman Cain produce his crack pipe and certify it as solely symbolic? Because otherwise, we have to assume that Herman Cain is on crack. Why won't he submit to a drug test? What's he hiding? He's clearly "gotten" to Orly Taitz, who should have filed at least 35 federal lawsuits by now on this.

Edited on Mon Oct-10-11 11:31 PM by moondust
Like most conservatives, he either doesn't have a clue or is in total denial about how much of capitalist "success" is the result of pure luck and/or the inheritance of advantages like money and family connections and/or discrimination, not to mention all the contributions of "society" as Elizabeth Warren so beautifully reminded us.
