Georgia County inmates to replace firefighters
http://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-county-hopes-to-1198005.html
Instead of paying real firefighters they hope to save $500,000 a year by using slave labor. I thought only China did this.
They also save on police pay as the remaining firemen can do the job of watching the convicts. This could work out as well as the plan to use cons out on probation as farm workers after the new immigration law drove away most of the illegal farm workers. (It didn't and Georgia farmers lost millions this season due to crops rotting in the fields).

3. California does it, too.
We use convicts to clear brush for prevention and sometimes to fight fires as well.

6. Georgia used to allow local officials to use prison labor for chores
Yardwork, farm labor, repairs, etc. Eventually that got eliminated because the officials were getting free labor and not paying either the prison system or the prisoners for the work.

I guess some of the Georgia politicians remember those "good old days" with fondness and want to get that system back!

7. Sure. They'll run into burning houses and save people heroically
What is it going to cost to train convicts on how to be firemen? Nothing probably because they won't trained.

What is the matter with these people. They think they find a way to save money and they never even look past that. In the long run they'll spend way more money. Especially after people sue the living crap out of them for misusing their tax dollars.
