Wisconsin town considers banning cyclists and pedestrians on roads

The town of Hull is considering restricting bike and pedestrian use on some of its roads, a measure one advocacy group says is illegal.

A town public safety committee, which examined general safety on town roads this summer, came up with a draft ordinance in September that requires biking, running or walking groups to register their travel plans with the town or bans them from using roads outright.

The ordinance is in response to what town officials say is a growing problem with road safety, but local groups are concerned about the impact on biking and running in the town.

(snip)

But town Chairman John Holdridge said there is anecdotal evidence to consider, too. He said the town gets a lot of complaints about groups of people running down the middle of the road at night or taking up most of the road during the day, or bikers riding on the wrong side of the road.

10. Give Scott Walker time...
I'm sure he and his GOP buddies will pass a law making it legal for counties and towns to do this.

3. Then they need to get busy putting in sidewalks and bike paths.
I mean, the people violating traffic laws in the ways the chairman describes are incredibly stupid, but why not just ticket/arrest them on those grounds?

I live on the edge of a suburb in TX, and when I walk to my college less than a mile away, there are NO sidewalks once I leave my subdivision. I don't walk in the road because that would be suicidal with the way people drive around here. But it's not fun trudging through weeds, ducking untrimmed trees, and dodging broken glass and other litter, either.

5. What??! This isn't from the Onion? Ridiculous.
That town may want to take a look around at the rolls of flab I'm sure can be seen all over the people at town hall meetings. This won't exactly prevent anyone from gaining weight.

7. There are darned few problems which cannot be solved by:
1) A sufficient quantity of high explosives
2) Public financing of all political campaigns
3) $10 a gallon gasoline
