Acacia Park occupiers vow to stay despite police warning of arrest

<snip>
Eviction looms for Occupy Colorado Springs protesters after being told Tuesday to take down their tents in Acacia Park or face arrest.

Protesters vowed to stay put and face jail time despite warnings to disband their campsites and stay out of the park when it closes at 11 p.m. The ultimatum was given during a meeting that Occupy Colorado Springs protesters had with four Colorado Springs police sergeants and lieutenants Tuesday afternoon.

“We have to take a stand, wherever we are,” said Kristie Wheeler, 32, of Colorado Springs.

Eleven o'clock came and went Tuesday without the materialization of any sizeable police presence, aside from an occasional unmarked cruiser passing by. About 50 of the protesters continued their cold vigil on the Acacia Park sidewalk.

1. What is with these stupid mayors and city councils? These groups
are not demonstrating against them. If fact since most cities and towns are suffering from the same greed the rest of us are, the demonstrators are actually fighting for them. Set up places the protesters can do this as long as it takes.

2. I just got back from the park...

Ran into an old friend I had not seen in about 12 years. He had worked on my campaign in my once-foray into politics.

There were about 200 people milling around the park on a warm late summer day. The "occupiers" were set up with a couple of tents with groceries and literature. A couple of TV stations had sent out a couple of cameras.

An older gentleman was having a heated discussion with two or three of the youngsters. I couldn't help but join in. He was calling them a bunch of socialists and communists. They didn't want to work. They only wanted welfare. Obama...blah...blah...blah...

When a young black man walked by, it heated up a few degrees. He told the old fart the problems with the economy were caused by the Bushes, not Obama. As the young man walked away in exasperation, the old guy attempted to follow him across the street trying to make his point.

I suspect the authorities may try to tear down the tents tonight?

(On edit, I told Jason, one of the young occupiers, I would mention him on democraticunderground) :-)
