FACT CHECK: Regulations not a huge jobs killer
Edited on Wed Oct-12-11 10:36 AM by kentuck
<snip>
A look at some of the claims and how they compare with the facts.

MITT ROMNEY: "All of the Obama regulations, we say no. It costs jobs."

RICK PERRY: Regulations "are strangling the American entrepreneurship out there."

RICK SANTORUM: "Repeal every regulation the Obama administration put in place."

THE FACTS: Labor Department data show that only a tiny percentage of companies that experience large layoffs cite government regulation as the reason. Since Barack Obama took office, just two-tenths of 1 percent of layoffs have been due to government regulation, the data show.

Businesses frequently complain about regulation, but there is little evidence that it is any worse now than in the past or that it is costing significant numbers of jobs. Most economists believe there is a simpler explanation: Companies aren't hiring because there isn't enough consumer demand.

2. I wish their accusations were true.
Obama hasn't regulated businesses, especially banks and Wall Street criminals, nearly enough. :(

3. Here's some more fact-checking stuff, which blows away a lot of
the garbage they were spewing last night as well:

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said that in the early 1960s, all levels of government were "consuming about 27 percent of the U.S. economy," a number that has risen to 37 percent today. With that trendline, he said, "we cease at some point to be a free economy." Romney was close to right on the percentages. But the U.S. economy is still considered free by conservative groups that create measures of economic freedom. We rated Romney's statement Mostly False

4. I think it can be assumed that, if a Republican starts with "this administration's policies" . . .
when answering anything . . . then yes, the dumbass is talking all that jazz.

There's little evidence that anything has changed for businesses or corporations from an economic standpoint since the Bewsh II Administration. Life has not been made one dust-mite more miserable for the wealthy or corporations. No taxes have been raised. They're still offshoring jobs as much as they ever did. CEOs are now back up to a 475:1 Exec-to-worker salary gap. Corporate profits are doing better than ever. Hiring, as pathetic as it's been, is still a reversal from losing 400-700,000 jobs a month. They really have absolutely NO reason whatsoever to bitch about how hard or how bad they have it. AT ALL.

5. Regulations create jobs
Make pollution illegal, and companies have to hire people to clean it up.
