The Graphic Lighting Up Facebook Right Now
Economist and Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz spoke to #OccupyWallStreet in Zuccotti Park last week. These are some of his words.

That's how I got through college, 2 degrees. I know it can't be done now. Maybe the guy lives in a tiny town. Where I live, people have to make at least $14/hour, full time, to afford a place of their own, a car, its insurance, and food. There are very few $14/hour jobs.

I wonder what this kid is majoring in and how he'll feel when he finds out all jobs in that field are performed in Bangalore--by natives, because other countries don't let Americans come take their jobs.

People think they're so smart at that age. It's a shame to disillusion them.

50. You are right, most countries require you to prove that
there are none of their citizens that can do the job that you are applying for. It makes sense. Also. $14 an hour jobs are really crap, especially if you have to buy medical insurance. How can people not aspire to belong to a Union and have benefits and usually a living wage job? What will this "person(?)" do when they are no longer allowed to be on their parents health insurance.

When I was in H.S. in the '70's, I made $8 hourly, while a junior with no bills. Today, adults with families are supposed to survive on that.

Bill O'Leilly in his debate(?) with Smiley and West claimed that unemployment among college grads was 4.5%. Anyone know if this is true? I think it is another RW lie.

63. I've seen the 4.5% for college grads and believe it's at least close to true.
What is shocking to me is how many high school dropouts there are - those numbers blow the unemployment rate sky-high. I think the rate among high school dropouts is around 30%. (don't recall exactly but it's out there somewhere)

A lot of kids have huge challenges just finishing high school at all, let alone having a job during that time that allows them to save money for college.

That's probably what he means by "I've been saving since I was 17". It's not exactly like 17 is an early time to start saving for college if you plan to go when you're 18.

I'm not certainly not criticizing the guy for relying on his parents. But he pretends like he completely pulled himself up by his bootstraps.

62. Actually, given that it
Is a state system school, that is entirely possible. The problem is that many such scholarships are state or federally funded and those will soon be gone -in the same way that year after year they have slowly destroyed the original state university systems. I teach at a private university but am from a SUNY, and am very close to the faculty at one SUNY. They are watching their systems being destroyed. That bozo doesn't realize that his 90%scholarships are going the way of the dodo. The moron doesn't even recognize that the system he benefits from is one based in the idea of a common good and one premised on the role of government as having a social obligation to help foster an educated citizenry.

71. 2 additional thoughts on this guy .... well maybe more than 2 ....
1) I still don't buy his story ... "decent grades" do not turn into academic scholarships ... I know that there are other types of scholarships .... but because he references "decent grades", he is implying that the scholarships were based on his grades. I was able to get a Pell grant way back when, but it had nothing to do with grades, so either he's getting "needs based" assistance, or he's full of it. And I agree, as you seem to suggest, he's implying that a kid with "decent grades" can get scholarships that cover 90% ... and I seriously doubt that more than a tiny fraction are able to do so, whether academic or otherwise.

2) And yup ... agree completely .... the other thing the dope seems to miss is that State Colleges are funded, at least in part, by the state. Our taxes help keep them open.

3) I'm also thinking that he's not smart enough to be in college in the first place.

54. It never worked that way. Pure privilege - he expects the whole world to work for HIM for FREE
All the stuff surrounding him that he depends on for that comfortable life was created by OTHER PEOPLE, NOT HIM.

If he was living in a log cabin he'd made with his own hands, from trees he personally planted, on topsoil that he'd cultivated from bare rock, using tools that he personally mined and smelted the metal for, on his property, and had made all his own solid-state devices to build his own cell phone with...

...then I'd take him seriously enough to possibly have a debate.

But as is, he's simply another ignorant fool that thinks being full of shit is the same as being full of wisdom

67. I teach people
like this everyday ( although I am in a private system) who because they work very hard and often sacrifice simply don't recognize just how much of what they have achieved is because of a combination of their own hard work and the educational system and taxpayer funding that makes opportunity available. Pull out just one more element - say, health care when you are a student, or pell grants, or work-study grants, or tutoring programs, or any of the elements in a complex system - and that person who wrote that sign is screwed six ways to Sunday. They simply see 1) they are working hard 2) they are getting by. They don't see that they are so perilously close to the edge and when the right-wing cuts just one or two more programs, then all of their effort and hard work and boot-strap bullshit won't count for a damn thing.

I understand the person who wrote that sign ( even though upthread I called him/her a bozo and a moron - which I stand by). From his public school education, to his scholarships, to a state university system, he has already had a lot handed to him - by people who fought hard and worked hard to see that he would have those opportunities. I am sorry, but as a college teacher, I read that and I realize we have so much teaching to do.

I read these same sentiments from thinking Americans every day. I also read the opposite sentiments from uneducated teabaggers who are working against America's interests, and their own, due to their gullibility and fealty to Fox "News". I do wonder whether Stiglitz or anyone else can reach these poor lost souls.

Love that line. I was just replying to a FB friend who works for USPS, and one of his FBF's came on and robotically spouted the 'privatize it', 'free-market...blah blah blah'. My friend quickly told him they aren't tax payer funded. I was trying to add the Pension fiasco causing it, and just privitazing things isn't always the answer (see my 401K)...then I saw this.

Exactly. We stick the 'people' (Government) with things that our society wants/needs but doesn't make fat rich white guys richer, and we leave the cash cows to those fore mentioned guys...actually even fewer and fewer of those guys ta' boot!
