Remember, Remember, The Fifth of November
Edited on Thu Oct-13-11 04:32 AM by tavalon
This is an add on to the OWS movement, but I think it's important that each of us, even if we can't participate in the OWS movement, participate in this one small (big?) part of it. On or before the fifth of November, move your money to a credit union if you currently have your account at a bank. Did you know that Bank of America is starting a monthly $5 charge if you use your debit card, even once, during the month? Wells Fargo is testing out a similar tactic in five of the states it is in. I don't know about Chase, but really, you think they're gonna sit by while their buddies score more money off the backs of the 99%ers? I don't think so.

Many Credit Unions are open to anyone. Here, where I am locally, there is BECU, which happens to use the same online format as Wells Fargo, so for any of you who really like Wells Fargo's online format but didn't realize that starting this month, you in Washington State are part of a test program in which you'll be charged $3 per debit card that you use, you can feel confident and comfortable moving to BECU without having to sacrifice anything but extra fees, lots of extra fees.

No, I don't work for BECU. I'm actually a Wells Fargo customer who will be moving my accounts in the next 2 weeks and I will be telling them why.

1. I will leave a red rose at Wells Fargo/Wachovia when I close my account.
I have already opened my credit union account.

3. How great would it be if we all did it? That's a story I would love to see on Maddow.

5. Oh, yes
The greatest thing would be if all of us who moved during the next few weeks left a rose on Nov 5th, perhaps with a personal note explaining it. I think your addition is magnificent. I wouldn't mind seeing a Guy Fawkes mask propped up by all of those roses.

For no good reason, I've got Alice's Restaurant running through my head. Oh, yeah, the part about a "movement!".

13. I wrote to the folks who are spearheading this effort and suggested
your rose idea. It is just so perfect, I can't believe no one thought of it before. Then again, someone probably did and then decided we'd be branded terrorists, but then, there is strength in numbers, no? I almost watched V for Vendetta again last night. Such a stirring show.

12. BTW, I heard through the grapevine that it was the anarchists who started
OWS. If that is so, I intend to research the hell out of them. I'm a socialist now, but I've already been converted once (when I came to DU, I was a true blue Democrat - I got better thanks to my education right here). It could happen twice in one life.

27. "All anarchists are socialists, but not all socialists are anarchists." - Joseph Labadie
Also, Benjamin Tucker (and individualist anarchist) proclaimed:

"All anarchists are socialists, but not necessarily all socialists are anarchists."

Before the International Workingmen's Association (First International), there were various competing theories of socialism; the predominate one was Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's theory on Mutualism (and he was the first to describe scientific socialism which Marx later took for himself to establish his bona fides). Proudhon was the first to proclaim himself an anarchist. His protege, Mikhail Bakunin (collectivist anarchist) battled with Karl Marx at the First International over the basic role of the state in the revolution. Marx favored using the state and the "dictatorship of the proletariat." Bakunin was against any dictatorship, state, or vanguard party. The resulting split in philosophies had Bakunin expelled, and henceforth, the followers of Marx were described as state socialists, while those that followed Bakunin considered themselves libertarian socialists, and later anarchists.

Daniel Guerin, an anarchist historian, explains more in detail in "Anarchism: From Theory to Practice."

Also worthy of note is Proudhon's "What is Property" and "The Philosophy of Misery" (Marx concocted his straw man with his "Misery of Philosophy" in his polemic against Proudhon.

That should get you started. There are many Anarchists FAQs out on the internet, too. Hope this helps.

11. Doesn't mean you can't leave a calling card with BofA
on the fifth of November. Call it a virtual run on the banks. Let's watch the Oligarchs shit their pants, eh?

I just looked him up on imdb to see what he's been up to lately, and, well, that's what he's been up to lately.

18. It is too inconvenient for me to switch banks.
I have been a Bank of America customer for years. I would have to switch all the automatic payments to a new bank account and also the direct deposits. I have two Bank of American branches within minutes of my house, so if I ever have to visit one of the branches, it is right there, practically around the corner. The nearest credit union is about 10 miles from my house through heavy traffic. I read that if you have $5,000 in your checking you will not be charged the $5. So I will just move a few thousand from my savings to my checking.
