'Indignant' Protests to Sweep Across World

MADRID — "Indignant" protesters, angered by a biting economic crisis they blame on politicians and bankers, vow to take to the streets worldwide Saturday in a protest spanning 71 nations.

A rally in Madrid's Puerta del Sol sparked a movement It is the first global show of power by the protest, born May 15 when a rally in Madrid's central square of Puerta del Sol sparked a movement that spread nationwide, then to other countries.

As governments cut deep into welfare spending to try to trim huge sovereign debts, protests have grown and this weekend's demonstrations are being organised in Madrid, New York and around the world.

"United in one voice, we will let politicians, and the financial elites they serve, know it is up to us, the people, to decide our future," organisers said in a statement on http://15october.net/.

4. Indignant?
For some reason using that particular word to describe the real rage, disgust and desperation these protests are expressing make the entire situation sound (not sure how to describe this accurate) dishonest? petty? minor? naughty?

I don't know. I just don't like that word when used to describe the strong emotions out there.

6. I think in French and Spanish it means more like "outraged"
Unfortunately, it loses by literal translation into English.

http://dmarionuti.blogspot.com/2011/06/los-indignados.html

These days indignation is a right and proper, indeed compelling, not to say compulsory, sentiment. It was forcefully advocated by Stéphane Hessel, the 93-year-old former French resistance fighter, in his influential though somewhat over-rated pamphlet Indignez-Vous (2010). “In this world of ours – Hessel writes - 'there exist intolerable things… Indifference is the worst of all possible attitudes… One of indispensable capacities is the capacity to feel outraged, and the commitment that derives from it”.

When Stephane Hessel wrote in Time for Outrage! that indignation with injustice should turn to ‘a peaceful insurrection’ perhaps he did not expect that the movement of ‘indignados’ in Spain and ‘aganaktismenoi’ (outraged) in Greece would take his advice to heart so soon and so spectacularly.
