Until Americans stand up and protest Afghanistan, we will remain there as well, feeding the military industrial complex.

48. As we should have figured out
from the French and their Vietnam experience. And lo, decades later, in a somewhat parallel situation of ignoring historical precedents, we're pissing away billions and up to our eyeballs in Afghanistan, which has tossed-out, defeated and sent home many diverse invaders/occupiers going back to Alexander the Great.

17. I'm sure this is not serious, but no one person, of course, is responsible for the opposition
to the Vietnam War. Many protesters in the USA helped demonstrate the immorality of the war, and in fact, it could be argued that Fonda's hanging out with the Vietcong actually hurt the anti-war movement.

27. The 1968 Tet offensive may have been a major tactical
Edited on Thu Oct-13-11 10:29 AM by coalition_unwilling
defeat for the 'VC' (sic), but it was a major strategic victory for the NLF, the NVA and the Vietnamese people. Why is that? Because Westmoreland's strategy (if one can call it that) was based on a doctrine of 'attrition,' i.e., if we stayed there long enough, we could attrit enough NLF and NVA forces to cause Ho's government to sue for peace on terms favorable to us and our puppets in Saigon.

Westmoreland landed at (IIRC) Tan Son Nhut airport in November of 1967 and said in front of the television cameras for the nightly news back home that he (and, by extension, the U.S.) was beginning to see "the light at the end of the tunnel." Meaning, i suppose, that Westmoreland was saying that the strategy of attrition was starting to bear fruit. Hah! Not two months later, the NLF and NVA showed exactly what that light at the end of the tunnel really was, i.e., the locomotive of Vietnamese nationalism coming down the tracks at the U.S., tied to the tracks by 20 years of lies and failed policy.

So what Tet 1968 demonstrated was that Westmoreland's strategy of attrition was an EPIC FAIL. And really, who should have thought any differently? Ho Chin Minh had famously said that the Vietnamese could afford to lose 100 soldiers for every 1 soldier the U.S. lost and could afford to maintain that loss ratio in perpetuity until the U.S. occupiers left and Vietnam was united.

Edited for clarity and some pernicious typos.
