24. I just went through this exercise with
my niece so the numbers are current.

(room and board are not an issue)

2 year NC community college, 4 semesters for gen ed requirements:

$1100/semester x 4 = $4400

East Carolina University $5364/year x 2 = $10728

total tuition and fees: $15,126

+ $1100/year for books (national average) = $19528 for a college degree

Working during school term: 20 hours per week x 40 weeks x $8/hour
Working during the summer: 40 hours per week x 12 weeks x $8/hour
after estimated taxes (7% payroll/15% fed/6% state/no possible refund accounted for) = $7300/year x 4 = $29,000 total.

$29000 - $19,528 = ~$10K for shits and giggles over 4 years.

it can be done and I didn't factor in any possible financial aid she may/would qualify for.

So if he doesn't want to see the thugs on Wall Street that crashed the economy for another 50,000,000 bonus go to jail or account for the destruction of the economy, then he most decidedly does not belong with the 99%.

He would therefore be nothing but a quisling.

Barely above minimum wage.
That's about 8 bucks an hour.

So--- what---240.00 per week minus 40 in taxes....

200 take home?

Really--- he has an apartment? what-- no cheap car with insurance and gas costs?---hell--- gas and insurance alone will eat a 1/3rd out of the 800 a month take home.

What----no Cheetos to eat while drawing up your stupid signs?---Food---gotta be at least 50-200 per month.

Started saving for college in his senior year of high school. Part time work in high school--- he'd be lucky to have saved a grand.

Sorry---this douchebags math simply doesn't add up in the real world.

it is their choice to accept facts, or- not.

Good Luck finding a job in your field when you graduate.

Even then you will still be in the 99%

Chances are you will always be in the 99%.

There is a reason it is only 1%. These are very rare people.

They're not living real adult life yet. I thought life was pretty simple, too, when I had three roommates in our run-down apartment and worked two jobs and was able to walk or take the bus everywhere I needed to go. But that shit gets old by the time you are 22, and your roommate is boinking with her skeezy boyfriend on the couch in the living room so you can't go into the kitchen to get a drink or even go to the bathroom without SEEING somthing you don't want to see, or one of your roommates decides to move out and you can't find a replacement, so now you have to take a bigger share of expenses, etc. etc.

13. Lots of statements of self-worth and a misconception.
Pride is something we often don't think much about, but pride is the thing that makes it hard to ask for help, even when a person needs it.

This person is clearly proud, and that's why he/she says I expect nothing to be handed to me. There is nothing in that which is other than mainstream working class values...work hard and you'll make it...that's the same dream held by the 'OCCUPIERS'

What is misunderstood is this...NO ONE IS ASKING FOR HANDOUTS! What is being sought is FAIRNESS. A system where the 99% aren't a prey resource to be exploited by a predatory class that enjoys preferred treatment by government.

20. This fails because the 99 % aren't lazy, stupid, bad planners...
The last few year tuition is way up, many states dropped aid to schools and cranked up state school costs. Even if your plan at 17 years old to pay for school with 90 % scholarship and 30 hours of minimum wage pay worked in year 1 of school. By year 4 of school there is no guarantee you still would not need a loan. Not in today's economy. Then there's the part of entering the work force. How long is this person going to be happy at minimum wage? Even with a college degree? They could get an advanced degree but that will need even more scholarships, more long hours of minimum wage work.

Hey I understand this persons "plan". That was my plan. It worked. But you know what even with a good education, no debt, a good job... I'm still in the 99 % wealth bracket. That's the irony. Once you get that the hard work, planning, being intelligent, honest... aren't by any means a guarantee you won't be part of the 99 %, then you get it and stop voting conservative. The wealthy aren't wealthy because they are better than the 99 %, they are generally just lucky. Luck is a major factor in life.

Academic scholarships are few are very far between. Very far.

And apparently this academic all-star (who doesn't have the guts to show his/her face, isn't too good at math, or attends a college that charges almost zero in tuition, books, fees, etc.

If I want to see poo flung about, I'll go to a zoo.

26. If true, it's just another arrogant person who thinks
they're sooo much smarter and better than everyone else.

Yet they fail to understand the circumstances which may lead to other people being unable to find a cheap college, find jobs or affordable apartments.

It's just like a rich person saying, "Well jeeze, I managed to become rich, why can't YOU dumbass?"

And yes, I look forward to seeing this person in a few years when they're unable to find a stable, dignified job which pays enough to lead an independent life.

27. even if they find a stable, dignified job which pays enough to lead an independent life
they're still part of the 99 %. The odds they manage to rise to the top 1 % is really, really low. You can do everything "right" and still find yourself hurt by fraudulent banking, corrupt politicians, inflation, devaluation of currency... it's when you figure out you did everything right but the system has problems that still effect you an are set at the advantage of organizations and people you can not be a part of, that's when you stop pretending you aren't in the 99 %. You don't become part of the 99 % by doing things wrong.

But wait a minute, you stated that you attend a state university. That means your tuition costs are subsidized by the government and you're expecting that taxpayer dollars will help fund your education. zOMG, that's socialism!!!1

:eyes:

This person is a total tool. Hard word alone is not a recipe for success, and a lot of people pull you up and help you along the way. No one is completely successful on their own. Horatio Alger is dead. Not that the OWS movement is about lack of work ethic anyway.

Even if these claims are true (and I doubt they are), this person is just one illness, major accident, or layoff away from losing everything they have worked for.
