#OWS about to get Played
Edited on Thu Oct-13-11 03:35 PM by jsamuel
Right now, Bloomberg is trying to play #OWS.

He is saying they are just going to clean the park. That is what the media will grab onto. However, the truth is that they are also putting in new rules namely:

NO LYING DOWN, SLEEPING BAGS, ...

Hard to keep an occupation going when you can't sleep.

Don't let them get away with framing this about dirty hippies not allowing them to clean the park.

Pic of rules:

20. There is an issue, the agreement signed with the city by the
private owners allows the protesters to be there. That is why they have not been removed, this was dealt with in the beginning when the Mayor thought they could be removed.

Now they are trying different tactics. Hopefully the legal support teams will deal with the latest attempt to remove them.

29. Interesting NYT coverage of the agreement. Far from unique
Turns out it may be one of the few places in NYC that camping was originally allowed.

It's not an optimal idea but here's something that might help someone to sleep while sitting:

18. It's not quite that simple
because these spaces were essentially given to the public in exchange for zoning concessions, they should be treated as public space. Shepard sums up:

If the city chooses to push occupants out of the space on the grounds that it is privately owned, they will not be steady ground. Zuccotti Park was created in exchange for increased height for 1 Liberty Plaza the building just to the north of the Park.

16. Well, they didn't yet, but are now.
They are basically saying they aren't allowed to sleep there NOW. What they did or did not do in the past isn't really the point here.

21. Not without losing their tax breaks.
Edited on Thu Oct-13-11 05:42 PM by jsamuel
They, a large corp., get a tax break for leasing the park to the public. At least, that is the way I understand it. So, this is a little microcosm of the problem here.

8. Yup. So far every crackdown
...has only strengthened support for the protests. Still, call the mayor's office if you can. Expect to be on hold a loooong time. The phones are seriously jammed up today, which I take to be a very good sign.

Freedom of assembly, guys. Interference of material items such as benches, sitting areas or walkways is NOTHING compared to the interference of human lives.

23. Make no mistake, Bloomjerk just moved queen to bishop three
The mayor just posted a new message: we are in charge here and we are laying down new rules.

The protesters are cleaning the park now but I will be surprised if TPTB don't force them leave in the morning and it will be game over at Liberty Plaza.

32. If they are forced to move, this movement will grow
to double what it is now. And the Mayor may find his entire city occupied over the next few months. He is completely underestimating the support this movement has, nationwide and worldwide. People will travel to his city to let him know, it is not just the people in the park he will have to deal with in his cowardly, blatant attempt to stop a movement that is not going anywhere until the people get the attention of this government and force them to start representing the people they are supposed to be serving.

In just 26 days with practically zero coverage by the MSM, over 80% of the american people are familiar with the movement. 54% support it. That is an amazing amount of support especially considering the Media first ignoring it then trying and failing apparently, to denigrate it. Give them four more weeks and see the kind of support they will have.

79% say they support the slogan 'they got bailed out, we got sold out'. Right now, these protesters are more popular than all branches of government and certainly more than the Wall Street Police Dept and their Mayor.

I have a feeling that if anything bad happens as a result of police violence, this Mayor will regret this decision. He is on the wrong side of history, and that is never a good place to be.

78 other countries have joined this movement, many of them in Europe and Asia. On Saturday there will be an International 'Occupy Together' demonstration in countries around the world in solidarity with the Wall Street protesters.

He is dealing with fire which he may want to think about before sending out his goons again to attack the most popular people in the world right now. I think his political career is pretty much over. He needs to go back to Wall Street where he belongs. He doesn't represent the people.

The only reason he's changing the rules on the fly is to harass the OWS movement. He's not fooling anyone.
