The crazy conservative Christians at Sojourners weigh in on OWS… |
|
We’ve seen a new movement rise up in the United States during the past few weeks. People are gathering all over to challenge the direction our nation is going.
Occupy Wall Street protesters are giving voice to millions of Americans who are fed up with a rigged economic system and a political process that does not hear their concerns or reflect their values.
The protesters have started a national conversation about our country’s priorities and values, one that many of us have been having for months: a conversation about jobs, budgets, wars, and corporate greed.
We will see images and hear things from Occupy Wall Street demonstrators -- likely some that will offend us and some that will inspire. We’ll hear demands that we agree with and some that we don’t.
But we should all learn from them: It is time to speak up and change the direction of our nation.
Write Congress and tell them enough is enough. Send a letter to your local paper explaining your ideas for a moral economy. When you’re done, we encourage you to find ways to support the protests in your community and across the country: Donate some food, send messages of moral support, and most importantly, pray for God’s will to be done.
Blessings,
The Sojourners Team

Any minute now we'll have lots and lots of DUers popping in to tell us how delusional and nutty the folks at Sojourners are with cute references to invisible sky wizards and ancient fables. So this message can be safely disregarded by the Very Serious People.

3. but even delusional nuts who worship sky wizards and |
|
follow ancient fables can be correct about corporate greed. Case in point.

7. Even delusional nuts who believe in wholly imaginary constructs such as politics |
|
Even delusional nuts who believe in wholly imaginary constructs such as politics, nationalism and philosophies can be correct too.
Case in point, part two.
However, I do realize many people will rationalize that their own imaginary constructs are rather more valid than the imaginary constructs of someone else.

11. Jesus did, after all, throw out the money changers. |
|
And the Romans executed him because he was an "agitator."

6. My first thought was different, though you still won't like it. |
|
So when conservative christians try to put their form of religion into government (DOMA, abortion laws, etc) we here at DU think it is shitty. When the liberal christians try to put their form of religion into government, we are fine with it. Why? We have a secular government and trying to have god's will be done with economic policy is just as much bullshit from the left as from the right.
And what if their invisible sky fairy is a douchebag and his will is that the 1% just keep getting richer? Is that better?

9. because the liberal Christians *don't* try to put their form of religion into government |
|
They might say (although they don't seem to do so here, although this might not be their complete statement) that Jesus wouldn't be in favor of CEOs ruining lives while collecting record-breaking bonuses, but they aren't saying that Jesus' opinion is ipso facto the reason it's wrong for our nation to be going in that direction.
And that's just one difference between conservative Christians and liberal ones--another major one being their concern for the poor and downtrodden; conservative Christians seem to think Jesus would tell the hungry and homeless to pull themselves up by their bootstraps or go die in a hole, whereas liberal Christians think government has a place in remedying that situation. But again, liberal Christians don't try to say that we should do that because of religion, but because it's the right thing to do.

From the OP
"Send a letter to your local paper explaining your ideas for a moral economy. When you’re done, we encourage you to find ways to support the protests in your community and across the country: Donate some food, send messages of moral support, and most importantly, pray for God’s will to be done." emphasis mine
The second one is pretty clear. Whose morality do you think they mean?
ETA: Those conservative Christians have biblical support for their interpretation of Jesus, too, you know. Which is why we need to just keep it secular from both sides.

I do not believe homosexuality is a sin, like Jim Wallis of Sojourners does. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2011/05/10/these-are-the-progressive-christians/edit: regarding GLBT freedoms: "Sojourners position is to avoid taking sides on this issue."

14. Progressive politics, conservative religious beliefs. |

I find myself in 80% agreement with them, but the 20% is full of bombshells.

They are well intentioned and have done some very good things on behalf of social justice. Heck, anytime you have Glen Beck sputtering for months against your organization, you are clearly doing something right.
That said, you are right about the bombshells.

13. Great! I wish their monthly circulation were more than 3.5% of Pat Robertson's daily audience tho' |
|
but it is indeed nice seeing the more liberal believers doing a bit to counteract the right wing theocratic hordes.
