(10-14) 17:03 PDT DALY CITY -- A Daly City man was placed on five years' probation today for burning his 17-month-old son in a hot stove while trying to teach him that ovens are dangerous.
Gregory Colver Jr., 21, must also spend two more months behind bars, undergo counseling and attend parenting classes, Judge John Grandsaert of San Mateo County Superior Court said at a hearing in Redwood City.
Prosecutors asked for a five-year prison sentence, but Grandsaert rejected that and ordered Colver to serve a year in county jail minus 266 days' credit for time served. Under sentencing formulas, that works out to about two months left for Colver to serve.
A jury convicted Colver in July of felony child endangerment and cruelty to a child.

FIVE YEARS'PROBATION? This behavior is INEXCUSABLE; normal sane people would never THINK of doing this kind of thing. If this guy really needs to torture his kid like that to teach him about dangers, it's really telling about his psyche. There are people out there who've gotten harsher sentences for shoplifting or possessing a blunt.
