Probation, counseling for dad who put tot in oven (but jury convicted him of felony endangerment)
(10-14) 17:03 PDT DALY CITY -- A Daly City man was placed on five years' probation today for burning his 17-month-old son in a hot stove while trying to teach him that ovens are dangerous.

Gregory Colver Jr., 21, must also spend two more months behind bars, undergo counseling and attend parenting classes, Judge John Grandsaert of San Mateo County Superior Court said at a hearing in Redwood City.

Prosecutors asked for a five-year prison sentence, but Grandsaert rejected that and ordered Colver to serve a year in county jail minus 266 days' credit for time served. Under sentencing formulas, that works out to about two months left for Colver to serve.

A jury convicted Colver in July of felony child endangerment and cruelty to a child.

Seriously. This kind of crime deserves only FIVE YEARS'PROBATION? This behavior is INEXCUSABLE; normal sane people would never THINK of doing this kind of thing. If this guy really needs to torture his kid like that to teach him about dangers, it's really telling about his psyche. There are people out there who've gotten harsher sentences for shoplifting or possessing a blunt.

1. Yet a guy who burned two buildings got 12 yrs in prison
because he's considered a domestic terrorist. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x2114059

I'm not saying Bond doesn't deserve some jail time but there's, IMO, a huge disconnect when you get more time for property damage than endangering a child, raping a woman, killing someone... the list goes on.

2. What is even sadder...
Is that he probably didn't think it up on his own. Behavior is modeled. OK, maybe he's an aberrant psychopath, but I kind of doubt it.
