On Oct. 15, The 99 Percent Movement Goes Global As Hundreds Of Protests In 71 Countries Are Planned
By Zaid Jilani on Oct 13, 2011 = http://thinkprogress.org/special/2011/10/13/342853/99-percent-movement-goes-global/

Since the occupation of Wall Street began on Sept. 17, additional protest actions have sprung up across the country. The protests found their inspiration in the outbreak of protests in the Arab world known as the Arab Spring.

On Saturday, global activists in 719 cities in 71 countries are planning protests in the same spirit as the American 99 Percent Movement and the Middle East’s Arab Spring. The demonstrations aim to bolster local democracy and to protest the tight concentration of economic and political power by a global elite. Although the protests will all be coordinated for Saturday, the various causes and demands will vary by the region the demonstrations are occurring in. As organizers are explaining, the solutions being proposed will be both global and local.

The YouTube account united15october made a video charting out the protest movements that are rocking the world this year and calling for people to join demonstrations this Saturday. Watch it: ....

US-style 'Occupy' protests planned Canada-wide
Toronto Sun - ‎11 minutes ago‎

Inspired by the thousands camped out on Wall Street in New York City to protest poor economic conditions and the unequal distribution of wealth, Canadians coast-to-coast are assembling Occupy Canada rallies.

Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, and Edmonton, and others, are among the 1,400 cities worldwide expected to see protesters on Saturday.

But the rallies planned in Vancouver and Toronto have some people worried, given the level of destruction sparked by last summer's G20 mayhem and the Stanley Cup hockey riots.

In Vancouver, mayoral candidate Suzanne Anton asked Mayor Gregor Robertson to detail the city's plan for protecting people and citizens should another riot break out.

"It is fine to protest and express opinions," said Anton, "but ...............

New York (CNN) -- Protests swelled in cities nationwide Friday as police forces struggled to either corral or remove demonstrators from downtown parks and plazas in the latest development of the monthlong Occupy Wall Street movement.

Scores of protesters were arrested in Denver, Seattle, San Diego and New York, though reports of violence were rare. CNN iReporters sent in photos and video from "occupy" protests across several American cities.

In San Diego, CNN affiliate KFMB broadcast images of police detaining demonstrators as they gathered amid tents and tarps strewn about a downtown plaza.

Protesters appeared to refuse to leave the area ................

Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Protests against widening income disparity took place across western Europe and Asia today as the Occupy Wall Street movement spread around the globe, with about 1,000 converging in London and 5,000 in Frankfurt.

In the U.K. capital, police barred protesters from entering Paternoster Square, home to the London Stock Exchange. In Frankfurt, marchers gathered by the European Central Bank headquarters, firing soap bubbles from toy pistols with plans to camp out, ZDF German television reported.

In the shadow of London's St. Paul's cathedral, protesters waved banners with slogans that read "No bulls, no bears, just pigs" and "Bankers are the Real Looters." Police parked vans in front of the cathedral to block access to the nearby LSE.

• Police bar occupation of London Stock Exchange
• Julian Assange addresses protest at St Paul's cathedral

5.17pm: Adam Gabbatt says Occupy Wall Street protesters are now approaching City Hall. The march must be 200m long, he adds.

4.58pm: Paul Harris says a man who hurled a glass bottle at protesters in New York was not challenged by the police.

A man emerged from an alley at the tail end if the protest. He hurled abuse at the marchers, screaming at them to get jobs. Then he threw a glass bottle that smashed within inches of a group of people. Cops watched entire incident and did nothing, even when asked to get out if their car.

4.55pm: Reuters has more details of today's protests in New York:

Hundreds of protesters marched on JP Morgan Chase bank buildings in the financial district, banging drums and chanting, "We got sold out, banks got bailed out."

Police were directing them to stay on the sidewalk ..........

I am curious, are the occupiers financed, who, how much, is it
done strictly by donations, or is there a big money backer?

I read the GA minutes each evening.
Over the course of time, they discuss their donations and what they are going to do with them.
A lot of the people there do NOT have jobs, some are retired. food and shelter there is provided, as is now medical, so there is not "loss" for many of the people.
Other people come and go from the site as time and obligations allow.

I read somewhere on this site that OWS alone has raked in a couple of hundred thousand bucks in donations. That doesn't include all of the other sites across the nation. I know that when I was down at the Berkeley occcupation, people are coming by all the time with food donations, blanket donations and monetary donations.

Herald Staff Writer = Saturday, October 15, 2011 - http://durangoherald.com/article/20111015/NEWS01/710159924/-1/s

By 5 p.m., however, Occupy Durango – a local manifestation of the hydra-like Occupy Wall Street movement – had grown to 50 strong, and protesters solicited honks from passing drivers, laughed, passed out signs and spoke earnestly of their vast – if as yet largely vague – political intentions. ....

.... Some political figures have likened the occupiers of Wall Street to a “growing mob” of “shiftless protesters” and even to “modified Nazis,” who should “take a shower and get a job.”

By comparison, the attendees of Occupy Durango seemed rather harmless. ......

OCTOBER 15TH
UNITED FOR #GLOBALCHANGE

On October 15th people from all over the world will take to the streets and squares.

From America to Asia, from Africa to Europe, people are rising up to claim their rights and demand a true democracy. Now it is time for all of us to join in a global non violent protest.

The ruling powers work for the benefit of just a few, ignoring the will of the vast majority and the human and environmental price we all have to pay. This intolerable situation must end.

United in one voice, we will let politicians, and the financial elites they serve, know it is up to us, the people, to decide our future. We are not goods in the hands of politicians and bankers who do not represent us.

On October 15th, we will meet on the streets to initiate the global change we want. We will peacefully demonstrate, talk and organize until we make it happen.

It’s time for us to unite. It’s time for them to listen.

55. INDIGNANT in Spain: Tens of thousands of 'indignant' protesters march in Madrid
Tens of thousands of 'indignant' protesters march in Madrid
http://www.expatica.com/es/news/spanish-news/tens-of-thousands-of-indignant--protesters-march-in-madrid_182173.html

Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of Madrid Saturday against government cutbacks to health and education spending, unemployment and corporate greed as part of a global day of protest.

The demonstration came exactly five months after Spain's so-called "indignant" protest movement was born with a rally on May 15 that turned into a sprawling protest camp that occupied Madrid's central Puerta del Sol for weeks.

The "indignant" movement then spread to Europe .....

"I think it is very moving that the movement that was born here has extended throughout the world. It was about time for people to rise up," said 24-year-old Carmen Martin as she marched towards Puerta del Sol.

"Many of the protesters wore matching green T-shirts with slogans against government spending cuts in education which have been a common sight at demonstrations by teachers against the government austerity measure."

63. March of the global anarcho-crazies
http://www.nationalpost.com/opinion/March+global+anarcho+crazies/5554638/story.html
Terence Corcoran, National Post · Oct. 15, 2011

Canada's Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Thursday the Occupy Wall Street movement "has a point." Then Mr. Flaherty jumped on a jet to Europe for a meeting of the G20 ....

.... Just a few short months ago, staff members at Adbusters magazine - one of the seminal agents of the modern-day culture-jamming movement - watched, rapt, as scores of ordinary Egyptians took to the streets to depose a dictator and end decades of brutal repression at the hands of their government.

"We had sort of a communal 'Aha!' moment," Adbusters co-founder Kalle Lasn recalled in an interview.

"We started wondering whether the same kind of tools that were used in Egypt, and the sort of regime-change philosophy, couldn't be applied to America."

The Adbusters editorial said that Tahrir Square Egyptians made a simple demand: Mubarak must go. The same could be done in America. "Following this model, what is our equally uncomplicated demand?" Oddly, Adbusters' demand wasn't all that grand. "We demand that Barack Obama ordain a parliamentary commission tasked with ending the influence money has over our representatives in Washington."

A reasonable proposition. I could vote for it. But a little too cute .........

Massive 'Occupation Party' underway in Times Square
by Chris Bowers - http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/10/15/1026789/-Massive-Occupation-Party-underway-in-Times-Square?via=user

As its happening VIDEO = a dizzying overhead video of the start of the Occupation party from Wonkette ....

===============
With most of today's marches winding down, the main event began at 5:00 PM ET in Times Square. It's time for The Occupation Party:

Street protest have been parading all day around the world–at Fordham Plaza in the Bronx, with tear gas and billy clubs in Rome–but the parades are heading to Midtown for the main event, an occupation of Times Square. The Occupation Party! No, it’s not a political affiliation. It’s a party. Like, a party. With music and dancing and glitter.

“In New York City, dozens of community groups, unions, student organizations and lots and lots of regular folk are taking to the streets in a mass protest that will culminate in Times Square at 5 p.m., then moving (by train party!) downtown,” says the website for the event.

Participants are directed to wear white, bring music and noisemakers and donations for the occupiers, and prepare for “a moment that will light the night (safe/legal and participatory)” at sunset.

“Think: white suits, dresses, face-paint, glitter, balloons, banners, be inspired,” the site says.

75. Occupy Vancouver: 4000 protesters. Completely peaceful.
http://www.vancouversun.com/travel/Upwards+protestors+march+downtown+Occupy+Vancouver/5556518/story.html

Close to 4,000 Occupy Vancouver protesters, escorted by the police, peacefully marched through the city's central business district, chanting slogans against corporations and growing social inequality.

Vancouver police department spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness said at its mid-day height the crowd numbered up to 4,000 people.

"It grew fairly quickly around lunchtime from a few hundred to a few thousand," McGuinness said. "No problems though, it's largely families and a diverse crowd."

" Look around - this isn't a bunch of stinky hippies, this is everybody," said Laurent Munier. "Every walk of life." "This city has never looked so beautiful," one speaker said as the day began.

77. Occupy Wall Street: The Most Important Thing in the World Now = Naomi Klein Oct. 6
I was honored to be invited to speak at Occupy Wall Street on Thursday night. Since amplification is (disgracefully) banned, and everything I say will have to be repeated by hundreds of people so others can hear (a k a “the human microphone”), what I actually say at Liberty Plaza will have to be very short. With that in mind, here is the longer, uncut version of the speech. .....

The 99 Percent Rise Up
John Nichols
October 12, 2011 = http://www.thenation.com/article/163942/99-percent-rise

How did Occupy Wall Street suddenly become Occupy Los Angeles? Occupy Cleveland? Occupy Janesville? Occupy Pocatello? How did a sleep-in beneath the skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan inspire kayakers clad as Robin Hood to paddle up the Chicago River under a banner reading, Wall St. Takes From the 99%. Gives to the Rich? And how did those giant cutouts of JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon end up dancing with all those San Franciscans chanting, “Make banks pay”? Despite what Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain suggests, it was not some “orchestrated” attempt to deflect blame from the flawed policies of the Obama administration. It was not the media looking for a “left-wing Tea Party.” And it certainly was not a poll-tested, focus-grouped PR campaign that billionaire-funded front groups employ to gin up movements.

Occupy Wall Street started small, took a beating from the cops and struggled for weeks to get the attention of the political class, the media and even its own natural allies. The only thing going for this unlikely intervention has been the pitch-perfect resonance of its founding premises. The American people understood Occupy Wall Street, and began to embrace its promise, long before the mandarins who presume to chart our national discourse noticed that everything was changing. That’s because the generators of this movement—and it is a movement—have gotten three things right from the start:

175 Chicago protesters arrested after being told to leave Grant Park
By Dawn Rhodes Tribune reporter

Chicago police arrested about 175 Occupy Chicago protestors in Congress Plaza just after 1 a.m. Sunday, about 90 minutes after police issued their first warning that the group was violating municipal code.

Police completed the last arrests and cleared the plaza of protesters at 3:30 am, more than two hours after arrests began.

The protesters will likely be cited with municipal violations and face fines, police said.

87. NYT: In Protest, the Power of Place
In Protest, the Power of Place
By MICHAEL KIMMELMAN
Published: October 15, 2011 - http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/16/sunday-review/wall-street-protest-shows-power-of-place.html?_r=1

THE ever expanding Occupy Wall Street movement, with encampments now not only in Lower Manhattan but also in Washington, London and other cities, proves among other things that no matter how instrumental new media have become in spreading protest these days, nothing replaces people taking to the streets.

Another reminder came late last week when the landlord of Zuccotti Park, where the demonstrators in New York City have settled, at the last minute withdrew a request for police assistance in cleaning up the park. This, at least temporarily, averted a confrontation in front of the global media over what protesters regarded as just a pretext to evict them.

We tend to underestimate the political power of physical places. Then Tahrir Square comes along. Now it’s Zuccotti Park, until four weeks ago an utterly obscure city-block-size downtown plaza with a few trees and concrete benches, around the corner from ground zero and two blocks north of Wall Street on Broadway. A few hundred people with ponchos and sleeping bags have put it on the map.

Kent State, Tiananmen Square, the Berlin Wall: we clearly use locales, edifices, architecture to house our memories ............
