I think its almost time for Occupy Wall Street to go viral |
|
I'm among those who doubt the "occupy" strategy will hold up well in the face of winter weather. Even if a few dozen people doggedly hang on in the key locations, it won't have the same impact. I expect the current protests will stay lively through Thanksgiving, maybe Christmas if we have a mild fall, but after that other means of remaining visible will be necessary.
Perhaps the greatest strength of the movement at this point, though, is that it's going viral. People are stepping up to say "I am the 99%," even if they've had no formal association with the protests. And that identification in itself can bring people together and cause them to spontaneously self-organize.
So the idea that keeps tugging at my imagination is of a season in which everything becomes an occasion to "occupy." Occupy Halloween. Occupy Christmas. Occupy Martin Luther King's Birthday and Occupy President's Day. If it snows, build a virtual protest of Occupy snowmen.
Occupy your local elections -- even if it's only an off-year vote for borough council. Show up with your signs, stand at whatever legal distance the people handing out party literature maintain, and get out the message. And if there's anything happening in January that's grand enough to be considered an inauguration ceremony, occupy that too.
The call of the moment seems to be "occupy everywhere." But the way to go as the cold weather sets in might better be "occupy everything."
