‘Bank Transfer Day’ Protest Attracts Massive Facebook Following, As Well As “Bank Trolls”

By Carl Franzen, Talking Points Memo

15 October 11

remember, remember…to close your bank account and transfer your funds into a credit union on the fifth of November?

That's what more than 32,000 people on Facebook have pledged to do as a form of protest against the much-reviled debit card fees that some of the nation's largest banks are testing or planning on introducing.

Remarkably, all of those people came together in just over a week under the umbrella of a single Facebook event page, the aptly-named "Bank Transfer Day," created by Kristen Christian, a 27-year-old Los Angeles-based independent art gallery owner.

The explosive popularity of the event is no doubt due in part to Christian's savvy skills as a marketer: Seeing the Occupy Wall Street movement spread across the U.S. and knowing the appeal of "Anonymous" stories online, she recruited San Francisco-based artist Eddie Colla to design the "Guy Fawkes" mask logo for her Facebook page. The Facebook page also includes black and white imagery designed to be printed out as paper flyers and posted offline in the real world. One of the flyers contains a QR code linking back to the movement's Facebook page.

1. I *almost* wish I had an account with a big bank to close on that day
but I gave big banks the finger many long years ago, having done all subsequent business with credit unions. I would defy anyone to come up with a valid argument in favor of keeping their money in a big bank as opposed to a credit union.

4. Same here -- we've been a credit union family for decades now.
Our only contact with a commercial bank nowadays
is my business's commercial account and the mort-
gage on our house and with just a little luck,
that second point of contact will pass into
history soon.

2. And after the citibank videos go viral, the number will most likely increase.
they are scared of people taking their money out. All those little deposits and debit card swipes add up. They are not too big to fail.

3. May not happen on the 5th but it will around that time
I wasn't happy when Wells Fargo bought Wachovia and I'm really unhappy with the name change this weekend. Not sure what genius at Wachovia thought "Hey, let's buy Golden West!" but they should have been shot.

17. Name change?
Are they just getting around to rebranding your branches?

Our Wachovia wasn't redone until this summer, and it is still just temporary Wells banners held up by rope.

We have an account with a big bank, and have been arranging to close it soon. The timing of this will be perfect for us!

10. I like that. "Mistah Kurtz he dead. A penny for the Old Guy."
Thanks for the reminder. Glad we're finally hearing the bang and hope the banksters soon start to whimper!

Cheers to T. S. and peace to all.

20. The Banksters think we are just a bunch of disorganized, fringe
people.

Yesterday in Europe, one of the 1% was asked what he thought of the worldwide protests and his response was 'How do they concern me'? Talk about clueless and 'fringes'. I think when you belong to such a small minority YOU are the fringe.

12. It's going to have to be a gradual transfer for me...
B of A has ensnared me with bill-payer set ups and "keep the change" transfers etc etc.. But there is at least ONE savings account that I can transfer on that date without fees and other ensnarements.

I expect to be fully BofA-free by the end of the year.

23. Same here. I am with B of A and also have the same setups.
But I have a savings account and am trying to decide where to move it. Then I will work on moving the checking account. Any money going into my checking is by direct deposit and all my bills are automatic withdrawals. It is going to take a while to sort through it all.

19. I've been a member of my credit union
for at least 30 years. I wish I could transfer my mortgage, though. I originally financed through my credit union, but it's been sold at least twice, maybe three times, and now Citi Mortgage has it. Gag.

21. Switching my car loan
My checking and savings have been with a credit union for quite a while.... but my car loan has been with BoA.

I shouldn't have any trouble transferring that to my credit union.

22. You'll probably just have to take out a loan at the CU to pay
off the BoA thing with.

Just askin. I'd never do anything illegal.
