Message From Mark Kelly, Husband of Cogresswoman Giffords
A message from Mark Kelly, husand of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, via campaign chair Michael McNulty:

"The prayers and good wishes from the people of Southern Arizona and the country are deeply appreciated by our family. Your continued outpouring of support is powerful. As Gabby continues her recovery, I know she will be inspired and motivated by the heartfelt messages you have sent. Keep sending them.

"Many of you have asked how you can help and how you can honor the memory of those who were wounded or lost their lives. What united the victims of the tragedy on Saturday was service — they volunteered in church or at soup kitchens, worked in government, and tended to their communities. On behalf of Gabby and our family, I ask that you consider honoring their commitment to service by dedicating a few hours on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, this Monday, January 17th, to volunteer in your community.

"There is no way to make sense of this tragedy. But as President Obama said on Wednesday night, "We may not be able to stop all evil in the world, but I know that how we treat one another is entirely up to us. I believe that for all our imperfections, we are full of decency and goodness, and that the forces that divide us are not as strong as those that unite us."

9. A perfect way to honor her, and all of those affected by this tragedy.
Gabby has always been involved in her community, so what better way to honor her service than by giving of ourselves for a day. If you can't get out to a place in your community, please also consider making a donation of some type (financially or otherwise) to a worthy cause - there are many people out there needing help right now.

15. I saw coverage of this on the news tonight.
Maybe not this Congress member specifically but others were covered, shown back at work meeting with their constituents.
All they have to do is choose a secure perimeter with some people watching and working the crowd. It looked like hotel banquet rooms and meeting rooms were used, not supermarket parking lots. Though it looked like Keith Ellison of Minnesota held his in a food court at a Mall.
Locations were what I looked at first.
Brave people.
I'm walkin' with other members of my community in a local Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace March tomorrow morning. First time for everything.

Couldn't agree more! We are all humans sharing the same planet after all.

Thank you, Mark....and blessings on you & Gabby and all who were affected by the insanity of Jan 8th.

Mr. Kelly spoke publicly on Sunday for the first time since the shooting rampage left six people dead and his wife and 12 others wounded. He took the stage at a memorial service at the Tucson Museum of Art for Gabriel Zimmerman, an aide to Ms. Giffords who was among those killed.

His wife loved Mr. Zimmerman “like a younger brother,” he said, and was inspired by “his idealism, his strength and his warmth.” He added, “I know someday she’ll get to tell you how she felt about Gabe herself.” At almost the exact same time, about a half-hour’s drive east, another shooting victim — Dorwan Stoddard, 76, known as Dory to friends — was eulogized at a church filled with hundreds of mourners.

“There are no monuments to Dory, there are no streets named after him,” said the Rev. Mike Nowak, his pastor. “He was just an ordinary man. He did not become a hero that day — he was a hero every day of his life.”

22. Martin Luther King Center: Honor Gabrielle Giffords on MLK Day.
An Oakland youth organization founded in the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has issued a call for community volunteers, in light of this weekend’s assassination attempt on Arizona Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and six other individuals, including a 9-year-old child.

OaklandSeen received the following open letter to civic leaders from Roy Wilson, Program Director, Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center in Oakland. Dr. King was himself the victim of an assassin’s bullet in 1968. The Freedom Center has been active in supporting peaceful solutions (its motto: Ethical Leadership for Personal and Social Responsibility) and has issued a call to our community to show solidarity with the families of those unfortunate individuals who were killed or maimed in the attack. The time? Next Monday, on the annual commemoration of the MLK Holiday.
