1. That moderately price state university
Edited on Sun Oct-16-11 01:30 PM by Mz Pip
is subsidized by tax dollars. Those moderately priced state colleges are having to raise their tuition and fees because of decreasing revenue. Lucky that you got a scholarship.

The UC system in CA is getting close to private colleges as far as expenses go because of the increase in fees.

15. It's fake. Do the math.
This is a right wing fairy tale written by someone who remembers being at a state university 30 plus years ago, when tuition was $3000 for the whole year, books maybe $150, a 1 bed apt was $350 per month and groceries were $15 per week.

To have saved and to pay for the things they claim would require working well over 40-60 hours per week beginning as a sophomore in high school, and continuing that work schedule all the way through a 4 year degree.

I've noticed that the handwriting on many of these bullshit signs seems to belong the same person. Someone is probably getting paid to produce them.

31. Bingo! I was able to do this - 45 years ago
I was at a "moderately priced state university", I was on the GI bill, I had 2 part time jobs (one as a lab tech for the university and one as a reserve cop for the city) and my wife worked. We had a child but the child care was provided by the university. I also did not graduate until age 26.

I could never have done any of this if it weren't for a variety of government programs and I sure as hell would not be able to accomplish it today.

This is bullshit.

34. Scholarships pay most of tuition
Edited on Sun Oct-16-11 02:16 PM by Dover
I wonder what scholarships they were?

I had a plum deal like that for grad school. It was great. BUT there are far too few scholarships to go around to pay for most to go to school, particularly undergraduates. And with tuitions increasing that goes double. So we are still talking about a pretty small percentage of people that have access to education. On the other hand, these days it's debatable if all that expensive education will even pay off with job opportunities or decent wages.

Community colleges are doing well now because they are getting all the people that can't afford regular college. And that translates into a fairly cheap work force for corporations. Corporations love to give money to community college programs to train their future
worker bees. So now they won't have to go overseas to get them.

Which is taxpayer subsidized. Were it not for those subsidies, his tuition would be much higher. Hence the taxpayers of his state are paying for part of the cost of his education.

19. Its tuition is subsidized by taxpayer dollars.
It is attending a public institution paid for by tax revenues.

It is making 'barely over min.' working 30 hours a week - 30x8? 30x10? - therefore it is part of the NOT-53% the part who do NOT pay federal income taxes because they are SO FUCKING POOR THEY DONT QUALIFY.

In summary:
1) getting handouts from the actual 53%.
2) not part of the 53% as it is too poor.
3) typical and probably fake.

23. Ah yes, a member of I got mine fuck the rest of you
I wonder how this person would feel if they, or their parents, had bought a home only to have the bank screw up and they end up out of it. Or perhaps if they or a loved one got terminally ill without health insurance and racked up a couple million in medical debt.

How wonderful for this person no such tragedy has befallen them or theirs. How tragic they have no ability to relate to those who have not been so fortunate. Lastly, they must be very generous souls if they are content to see their tax dollars funding lofty lifestyles of the banksters. Perhaps they fail to notice the banksters they are so quick to defend did not pull themselves up by their bootstraps, as this sign-holder claims to have done.

36. wait until you get sick.
And you lose all your savings.

Or you job gets shipped overseas.

let's see. You're still in college, so you're not having to make a living yet, except for yourself. No children or dependents.

So, let's wait until your much older, in your forties or fifties, and your pension is stolen, or your savings are wiped out by the stock market, or your job is sent overseas a few years before you retire.... Or, as I suggested above, you get sick and are forced to retire early, before your pension is enough to support you. And your insurance company (you are fortunately insured, yes) declines to pay your doctor bills, because they don't like your doctor.

All the things that ought not to happen, and which do happen to nice people like you who do play by all the rules.

Those are the 99%.

YOu can't really say you're not part of them until you are much older.

I wonder. Are you going to pay cash for your house? Even that hasn't protected some homeowners.

Just wait and see.

40. I've posted this several times on FB...
(I stole at least part of it from somebody on DU.. Thanks, whoever!)

That's nice, kid. Get back to me in 20 years' time when you no longer have access to cheap student accommodation, your savings have been wiped out by an illness or other catastrophic event, and you're still working in those three minimum wage jobs because all the good jobs have been outsourced to India by that same 1% whose culpability you doggedly refuse to acknowledge. As for making it through college on two scholarships that paid for 90% of your tuition, that is about about as rare as unicorn sightings. You are correct about one thing, you are not the 99%. Everyone else is up to their eyes in debt paying for college. I am going to assume you are part of some organization that is footing their bills because I can't imagine someone getting a 3.8 is getting a free ride.... with your "decent" grades in High School. See how much you will enjoy being laid off while in your mid forties or fifties, and how your various meds cost more than you make. Oh.. don't get sick or hurt.
You obviously didn't take Economics, or you'd realize Wall Street's bad decisions and frauds are costing us all and there's more cost to come. Grow up and look around at what's happening. You are being screwed and you don't seem to even know it. Oh... and another thing, kid. You're not debt free. The clowns in both parties who run this country spent $2 Trillion on wars of choice. Your share of that is about $7K. Today's Wall Street Journal will tell you that wages are down in this country and won't rise for at least 10 years. There are 5 unemployed for every job opening. Median household income fell 23% between 2007 and 2009, and half of American workers now make $500 a week or less. The US has the 2nd lowest economic mobility in the developed world. So... considering your war debt and stagnant wages and the unemployment picture and the fact that you won't be buying a house anytime soon.... I have one question: Why aren't you in the streets?
