Occupy Wall Street has a fitting name. One of the meanings of occupy is “to take control of” and the Obama administration has been taking control of the economy for years — to terrible effect.
The “occupiers,” many of whom have supported Obama’s liberal agenda, are an apt symbol of the Obama economy. They truly believed President Barack Obama’s promises to create millions of jobs, but are now unemployed or underemployed because those promises never came true. Now they want someone to blame other than themselves or Obama.
If you listen to their complaints, you’ll hear deeply-seated worries about personal debt, mostly incurred from student loans, housing and health-care expenses. Desperate and lacking the paychecks needed to pay down their debt, they fault Wall Street. But, their grievances should be directed at Washington. Washington is where heavy-handed regulations and interventionist policies are perversely driving up costs and transforming workers into liabilities rather than assets, making it harder for employers to hire.
Just look at the plight of young Americans entering this miserable job market. In 2010, student loan debt outpaced credit card debt for the first time. Why? Since 1982, costs of attending college have increased over 439 percent, which happens to correspond with a nearly identical 414 percent increase in federal aid for college students since 1980.
