Some revealing numbers about Michigan's budget and our new GOP Gov.
Edited on Sun Jan-16-11 08:20 PM by Still a Democrat
Snyder must address the state's fiscal predicament -- a projected $1.8-billion deficit

Tax credits, exemptions and deductions amount to more than $36 billion that is not paid to the state. That's $6.3 billion more than what the state receives in taxes, according to the state House Fiscal Agency.

Property tax credits and exemptions account for another $11 billion not paid to the state. About $9 billion goes to income-tax credits and deductions.

Exemptions for businesses amount to about $2 billion.

One big target this year is the Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income taxpayers. This year, it amounts to $338 million.

The sight of State Police blue patrol cars on highways is a familiar one. But there's broad speculation that Snyder might eliminate those patrols and let county sheriffs and local police pick up the slack...It costs $144 million for 1,008 troopers that patrol from State Police posts.

A 5% across the board cut in employee wages would save the state general fund about $68 million a year, according to the House Fiscal Agency. Requiring state workers to pay 20% of their health care premiums instead of the 10% they pay now would save taxpayers another $50 million.

Revenue-sharing to cities, villages and townships -- where the state writes checks to help pay for local services -- has been a favorite target of budget-cutters for the past decade. In 2000, the state gave communities a combined $1.3 billion. Of that, $1 billion is set by the constitution and can't be reduced.

That compares to $2 billion in total revenue-sharing in 2000. Local officials argue that if the state had used the same formula in every year since, they'd have received an additional $4 billion over 10 years.

Last year, the state reinstated Medicaid coverage for adults for dental, vision and podiatry care at a cost to the state of about $6 million. Critics say those services are not required by the federal government, and many workers have seen those benefits slashed

==============

Billions in tax exemptions are ignored while low income workers, Medicaid recipients, state workers and cops are targeted. And not a word about our crumbling infrastructure or declining state parks.

1. The wealthy, who can afford to help, and would reap the same benefits, won't.

3. well there are a couple of options here ...
1. you can always try and get on local or county ... this would give you
some experience ... and then when the state police start to hire again ..
it gives you a leg up ...

2. If maybe that they will do the cuts thru attrition and forced retirement ...
and they are still going to hire entry level ... as you don't cost as much as someone
on duty for 20 + years ...

3. you can move .... :D

good luck ....

4. Engler II coming to a county near you very soon.
All I do in Michigan is pay more in fees and taxes and pay more into my pension and much more into health insurance. Must be the only way to get a tax break in this miserable state is to open a small business--hell even if it fails, I'll still be ahead.

And can someone tell me why this asshole can't wear a damn tie?

5. I'm monitoring this one closely
I have personal connections that I don't wish to share here but yeah, we'll see very soon won't we. It seems in my circle that some think this guy is a "Savior" and will be surprised I think when he falls short. I'm extremely skeptical of this guy but I'm trying to give him time before I call him a total fail. Don't get me wrong, I'd never, ever vote for such a person but of the Republicans presented he was the "lite" choice.

6. Ex-Governor William Milliken was one of the few Republicans that I have ever admired
Edited on Sun Jan-16-11 09:50 PM by Urban Prairie
But he governed our state mostly during its automotive boom era, '69-'83.

From his wiki page:

In 2004, Milliken broke with party ranks to endorse John Kerry in his bid to unseat George W. Bush as President of the United States: "The truth is that President George W. Bush does not speak for me or for many other moderate Republicans on a very broad cross section of issues."<3>

In 2008, Milliken endorsed John McCain for President, but backed away from his endorsement in October after McCain's campaign began attacking Democratic candidate Barack Obama. Milliken told the Grand Rapids Press "He is not the John McCain I endorsed." Milliken voiced disquiet at the direction of the Republican Party: "Increasingly, the party is moving toward rigidity, and I don't like that. I think Gerald Ford would hold generally the same view I'm holding on the direction of the Republican Party.

In 2010, Milliken endorsed businessman Rick Snyder for the Republican nomination for Governor of Michigan.

Michigan has always suffered longer than most states before and after recessions, due to its reliance mainly upon the domestic automotive industry. Our economic recessions started earlier and ended later. It also has historically been a federal-tax DONOR state, and our leaders in DC and Lansing should push MUCH harder for that status to change, so we might eventually get back at least as much as we have been putting in.

Our leaders in Lansing also need to advertise our state as a vacation destination, much more than they have, and promote tourism.

The foreign automakers are helping to turn a few southern right-to-work states, who have long been federal-tax recipients, into "automotive capitals" and are taking away some, if not many of our manufacturing jobs and there needs to be a more level playing field, IMO.

9. Sounds closer to elimination, to me
The article refers to it as "cutting the umbilical cord".
