Gallup: 50 Percent Support Marijuana Legalization
By: Jon Walker
October 17, 2011

For the first time in the decades that Gallup has polled American opinions regarding marijuana legalization, it found that more American adults support marijuana legalization than oppose it. According to Gallup a record 50 percent of Americans think marijuana should be legalized, while only 46 percent think it should remain illegal. From Gallup:

3. And President Obama launches a major federal crackdown on medical pot. Excellent political timing!
Edited on Mon Oct-17-11 08:20 PM by Better Believe It
That should enable President Obama to pick up a good ten or twenty prohibitionist votes for his re-election!

He might even carry California!

4. 51% is the magic number
It'll hit that in the next poll thanks to the recent CA Medical Association support.

Wow, someone pinch me!

5. Legalize it
I haven't touched it in over 10 years and never will again. I just don't care about it. Regulate it like alcohol and I'm fine with it.

20. I'm not. There are a lot of libertarians in the midwest
social conservatives, too, but the liberal and libertarian pov on this issue coincides in the midwest, and forms a majority.

21. women are the ones who deal with kid issues more often than men
I think a lot of the women who are anti-legalization are worried about kids.

That's why I think it's important to note that regulation would make it harder for kids to get cannabis - and to note that the dispensaries in CA have not resulted in more crime where they are located - in fact, the opposite has occurred.

Right now it's easier for a kid to get cannabis than alcohol. Mothers should be for legalization for no other issue than it helps to get it out of the schools and into dispensaries or cafes where ppl must abide by the law and check i.d.s and may not locate within x feet of a school, etc. - laws that are already in place for liquor stores.

26. Can pot be legalized at the city level?
The numbers are probably far higher at the city level than the national level. Can a city decriminalize pot or would the county and state police (as well as federal) still enforce the laws despite the city law?

What about state legalization/decriminalization? It should be time to push that. Age is the biggest factor, young people favor legalization and old people do not. Every year old voters are replaced by young voters, so now would be the time to start pushing for reform.

27. They can strike any laws criminalizing it from their books, but technically they
Edited on Tue Oct-18-11 05:43 PM by apocalypsehow
cannot "legalize" it since Federal law is the supreme law of the land, and marijuana is criminalized by statue at that level of government. Which is why this poll is so heartening: when even 44% in the South, and 35% of Republicans, are for legalization, then perhaps we can see the beginning of the end of this insane policy of locking people up for smoking a plant.

I agree with you that we should push for every city and state possible to strike such laws from their books, regardless of the ongoing federal prohibition.

Edit: clarity.

29. imagine the WTF if people wanted to criminalize tobacco
I mean, ppl generally agree that it is a health issue - that it has addictive properties - that it alters someone's consciousness...

but WHO in his or her right mind would think it makes sense to make tobacco smokers criminals?

in what universe does that make any sense?

it's a health policy issue and a religious one (for those who use tobacco as a sacrament.)

there is no way any reasonable person would think that the issue of tobacco use should be a criminal issue.

the same applies to cannabis.

the problem is that people have grown up and lived through decades of propaganda - that's it. that's the only difference in our laws regarding tobacco and our laws regarding cannabis.
