NY police: Man killed his kids, wife and himself
By Jim Fitzgerald
Associated Press / October 19, 2011

CROSS RIVER, N.Y.—A man in the middle of a divorce fatally shot his two children and bludgeoned his wife before killing himself in their sprawling home in an affluent suburb, police said Wednesday.

The bodies of Amy and Sam Friedlander and their children, 8-year-old Gregory and 10-year-old Molly, were discovered Tuesday afternoon in Cross River, north of New York City.

State police Maj. Michael Kopy said the bloodshed occurred Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The children were found in their rooms, covered with bedspreads; a piece of furniture was on the floor next to their mother's body. Police recovered the shotgun the father used; his body was found in the basement.

1. Horrible tragedy. A Banker and an Insurance Commissioner...

I wonder if their positions had anything to do with this.

4. This is the ugliest possible outcome of spousal abuse.
What the guy did for a living is secondary, AT BEST.

6. I do not disagree.
But looking at this from a wider perspective, considering what is going on in the world right now, might it be possible that their jobs played some part in this tragedy?

9. Why are you pluralizing your queries? ONE man murdered HIS family.

13. Yes, HE did.
I do not dispute that at all.

She was a VP for Chase bank, He was an insurance commissioner. Is it not possible that their jobs played a role in why HE murdered his family? I am talking about their jobs here, not the individuals.

14. I think it was one very emotionally messed up individual--I doubt his job had
much to do with it. If anything, a comfortable salary and standard of living probably helped for a while before he went berserk.

7. Most parents are not capable of this -even during a bitter divorce; there's got to be
some dreadful synapse in some people's brains that allows this to happen

16. Well, I say "most" because while statistically rare, this still happens with some regularity..
so it makes you wonder who will be the next parent to crack up and kill his kids. It'll happen again -and again -and again.

11. Really, asshole, you should have started the killing spree with yourself.

What is it about men (yes, it's predominantly men) who feel the need to take their whole families out with them? If your life isn't worth living, then nobody's is? I can't grasp this mindset.
