The monkey was last spotted in a gated community outside Dallas.
Update: Sheriff says a monkey and a wolf remain missing after animals escape Ohio farm - Columbus Dispatch

Lutz announced that authorities believe only two animals remain missing this afternoon -- a monkey and a wolf. The sheriff previously said a grizzly bear and mountain lion were missing. Today, authorities confirmed they killed the bear on the property last night. An officer wounded the mountain lion, which staggered into a neighbor's property and died.

1. I wonder why they couldn't have used tranquilizers? I don't understand why they
had to kill them. Seems pretty unnecessary and cruel, imo.

16. Well naturally it can be dangerous if not handled properly, just as anything else.

Animals have been tranquilized for decades to get them to safety or away from human populations.

28. The uninformed public probably doesn't know just how much safer
regular guns with bullets are.

11. They had a spokesperson on
The discovery of the animals on the loose occurred last night, and the authorities sent out their people immediately. Because of the darkness, and the fact that many of these animals are carnivorous nocturnal feeders, they didn't want to take the chance of missing with tranquilizers or having the tranquilizers take effect slowly and becoming a midnight snack themselves.

I'm not happy about the slaughter of these animals, but I can understand the course of action taken by the game authorities. In the political sphere, there may be two points to be made: First, it wasn't the Invisible Hand of the Free Market saving the public from roaming wild animals, it was public employees. Second, it was lax oversight on the part of the State of Ohio that allowed the game preserve owner to operate as he did. There were apparently plenty of problems with this guy before his final act, but for whatever reason, Ohio does not see fit to regulate feral animal keepers very closely. Hopefully, this incident changes that.

18. Thanks, yes this makes sense. Though I don't know why they
have to kill animals roaming in daylight, that aren't an immediate danger.

14. You wouldn't say that if you knew what was involved in "using tranquilizers".
First of all, those dart guns that fire an injection into the animal are not filled with some silly little minor tranquilizer. They contain M-99, a very potent and deadly controlled substance that requires special training and DEA registration to possess and use. When I was in veterinary school, we students learned about it, and were shown the guns and darts but none of use were permitted to handle or use it. If you accidentally poke yourself or another human, it is certain death. VERY DANGEROUS STUFF.

Furthermore, like any other injectable drug, it has to be DOSED CORRECTLY, based on an accurate weight. If you guess the weight wrong, it's goodbye animal (or drunk animal goes rampaging and hurts itself and dies or has to be euthanized).

We aren't talking about giving it a valium. This is damned serious business, and local cops and dog catchers don't know how to do it and don't have the stuff to do it with.

23. Exactly. And if you don't know if you are going to be running into the
grizzly or the mountain lion, there is no way to correctly estimate the dose. The one which would knock down the mountain lion would only piss off the griz - and you don't want to piss off a griz.

20. We've got a monkey that's been loose in Pinellas County Florida for 2 years.
They've managed to tranquilize him at least 6 times, and he still gets away. I don't think they even bother anymore.

22. Wow. I hope it doesn't get hurt, or hurt anyone. My sister and bil were stationed
up north for a few years, as an rcmp officer he helped park personnel more than a few times isolate bear away from the community. They all worked together, and I know as fact the park people used tranquilizers to relocate some. Others were killed. I guess it all depended on how persuaded they were the animals were not overly dependent on garbage and scraps.

9. this is a horrible story, I read the article
the owner committed suicide...but apparently let all the animals out before he did.

He left his wife with all of this to deal with.

Horrible.
