Conservatives Are ‘Fighting the Last War’ Against Occupiers

By Larry Durstin

While remotely controlling my life last week, I clicked my way around Cable News Land and here’s what I encountered in about 20 minutes:

Click: A leggy Fox Morning News blond sassily saying that the Occupy Wall Street crowd had to do one thing before anything else: “Shower” she yelped and wrinkled her nose while the guys flanking her smiled, Adam’s Apples’ bobbing. Later a toothsome brunette guest commentator testified that most of the Occupiers “were so high they couldn’t string a sentence together.”

Click: Emaciated conservative humorist P.J. O’Rourke asserting that the protesters’ actual leader was a set of bongo drums, then proceeding to demonstrate by playing air-bongos with his bony hands. This unfortunate performance only showed the audience that if O’Rourke would get more airtime, he would quickly replace Dennis Miller as the most loathsome conservative “funnyman” on the face of the earth.

2. He has NAILED it, IMHO...
Those idiots are fighting the last war, and they are so out of touch.

That's the problem with them: No new ideas. They keep trotting out the same, tired statements. Somehow they think (if you can call it that) that we won't notice how stupid they are.

Thanks for the link.

3. O'Rourke sailed around the bend of madness
a long time ago. His travel books, written when he was at Rolling Stone, remained funny, but he is just a sad, washed-up used-to-be. He was a considerable talent once upon a time.

6. They're also contending with the coolness factor
Back in the 1960s, everybody knew that both leftists and hippies were cooler, generally groovier, and had more fulfilling sex lives than the dorks on the right. And even though the young conservatives very briefly managed to make themselves seem hip and edgy in the economic boom years of the 90's, the makeover never really stuck.

So this time around, the left is starting with the advantage of a couple of generations of young people who have grown up wishing they'd been around in the 60s and knowing without a doubt which side they'd have been on if they were.

On top of that, to the extent that they actually are hippie-like, the OWSers are everybody's grandmother's ideal of what hippies should be -- polite, respectful to their elders, and eager to clean up after themselves. So what's not to love?

I think, by the way, that the hippie comparisons are only partially applicable -- and will become less so as the movement matures and evolves. But for the moment, they're definitely working in its favor.
