When Shakespeare wrote “first, let’s kill all the lawyers,” he placed the phrase in the mouths of the mob. He knew the value of law and order and was aware of who keeps it. The lawyers.

Whatever your view of Occupy Wall Street, it’s good to know that when your First Amendment rights need protecting, there are lawyers nearby to help you enforce your legal rights.

Some protesters choose to violate the law and can rightly expect arrest as a result. That’s civil disobedience in action. That’s how far you’ll go to have a voice in a robust democracy able to withstand the complaints of its citizens.

But you – we – shouldn’t be arrested for exercising our right of free speech and assembly unless we have broken the law. That’s where the National Lawyers Guild comes in, a left-leaning organization of lawyers who have the back of #Occupy Wall Street.

1. I know a couple of NLG lawyers who were waked up, radicalized, and became lawyers

entirely as a result of having been personally hit over the head by police batons during protests in the late 60's. The organization has the most dedicated people I've ever known.
