Clerk Shot, Killed Man Who Took Her Baby
Sheriff's Officials Investigate Fatal Shooting In Naples

NAPLES, Fla. -- A convenience store manager grabbed a gun from under the counter and shot a robber in the knee when the man scooped up the clerk's infant daughter, deputies and family members said Wednesday.

The robber tried to get into the cash register Tuesday afternoon at Del's 24-Hour Food Store in Naples but he couldn't open it. He grabbed a stroller with Elizabeth Easterly's 1-year-old in it and headed for the door, according to a sheriff's report and family members. Easterly shot the man and he died at a hospital.

"She's pretty much in shock, but she saved the baby," said Easterly's grandmother, Nancy Ackerman. "He was taking the baby outside, and she went over the top of the counter. I don't know how she did that because it's real high."

Easterly, 22, and her husband run the store for her grandfather, Del Ackerman. She was alone briefly during a shift change with her daughters, ages 1 and 2, when the man came in at about 3 p.m.

2. Too bad about the knee....
If you aren't going to get center mass one could at least hope for a crotch shot...

12. The reason people say that is because it's really easy to miss a knee.
What you see on TV, where people always hit what they're aiming at and you can shoot someone in the leg to disable them, is completely fictional. In reality, a knee shot is just as likely to kill as a torso shot, by virtue of hitting the femoral artery and the person bleeding out. Shooting for the knee isn't "merciful," it just ups the odds that you're not going to hit the person at all. Which in a life-or-death situation, is a problem.

14. Shooting low makes sense
Hard to tell for sure from the article, but if the robber physically picked up the stroller, then a low shot at the knee would be far less likely to hit the infant.

5. umm. She must have hit an artery and he bled to death.
Just guessing. The article said he died later.

8. Because it is better to stop the kidnapping while still in progress
than to hope the cops solve the case before the child is killed.
