Couple Plans To Live Under The Ocean
Couple Plans To Live Under The Ocean

COCOA, Fla. -- Today, the Chamberlands live under the sunny, blue skies of West Cocoa. Soon, they hope to gaze up through aqua-gray tints of Atlantica, the world's first permanent undersea colony.

They're determined to do so by 2015, somewhere off east Central Florida, maybe even Brevard County. They've signed up 13 others to live with them in cylindrical steel modules, 200 feet down and tapping into the Gulf Stream for energy, oxygen and scientific discovery.

The Chamberlands envision quarters safe enough for children. Even their cat, Snickers, will go with them, transported in a submarine-like cylinder with a glass bubble port, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

"Now we seem to be focused and preoccupied on space, but the ocean cultures are coming and they're coming fast," said Dennis Chamberland, a contract manager for NASA who's designed prototypes of advanced life support systems for the moon and Mars. "It's inevitable."

2. What do they plan to do with their waste..human and otherwise?
Edited on Mon Jan-17-11 09:12 AM by shraby
Vent it into the ocean? Pipe it to a waste water plant on land? Recycle it? Not mentioned also in the article is what do they do about supplies needed? A trip to the store when out of stuff to eat or toilet paper is a whole different matter.

11. The current record for living underwater is 69 days
the first mission of this project shoots for 90 days. This is not so much new activity as it is more and better activity. One assumes such things as planning for dinner are similar to being in places like space or Antartica, you take what you need.

7. Hmm...I browsed through their site. Long on concept, short on
details. There is, however, the expected donations page. Blue sky, apparently, doesn't just exist above sea level. Pretty website, though.

10. it would depend on how that energy is derived
simple usage is not the issue. It's HOW the energy is created. Sure, efficiency is important. However, if you have the available energy in renewable fashion, it would still be a green endeavor.
