GM crops promote superweeds, food insecurity and pesticides, say NGOs

Report finds genetically modified crops fail to increase yields let alone solve hunger, soil erosion and chemical-use issues

John Vidal, environment editor guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 19 October 2011 11.53 EDT

Genetic engineering has failed to increase the yield of any food crop but has vastly increased the use of chemicals and the growth of "superweeds", according to a report by 20 Indian, south-east Asian, African and Latin American food and conservation groups representing millions of people.

The so-called miracle crops, which were first sold in the US about 20 years ago and which are now grown in 29 countries on about 1.5bn hectares (3.7bn acres) of land, have been billed as potential solutions to food crises, climate change and soil erosion, but the assessment finds that they have not lived up to their promises.

The report claims that hunger has reached "epic proportions" since the technology was developed. Besides this, only two GM "traits" have been developed on any significant scale, despite investments of tens of billions of dollars, and benefits such as drought resistance and salt tolerance have yet to materialise on any scale.

Most worrisome, say the authors of the Global Citizens' Report on the State of GMOs, is the greatly increased use of synthetic chemicals, used to control pests despite biotech companies' justification that GM-engineered crops would reduce insecticide use.

1. no oversight... no thinking ahead of consequences
for this alone, that company should be desolved. I'm tired of hearing how important it is to enrich a few at the expense of billions of people. Screw them and their investor parasites.

2. Gosh. No one could have foreseen that coming.
(yes - that was sarcasm)

One needs only looks at our experience with antibiotics to extrapolate this kind of outcome to specialized pressure.

3. No these evil fuckers are thinking..
Take away people's ability to grow their own food they'll submit to anything to stop hunger.

Me,I'd just die if these fuckers got away with making the world their property, why starve ? why accept slavery? Both options are unacceptable. The fuckers who want to control our lives and be kings they want a utopia,a kingdom of happy servants too scared to rise up who'll do anything their little lord Fauntleroy says to not suffer more. The people that make it to the top KNOW THIS,they want to do it because they are soulless high functioning psychopath monsters that should not be allowed to exist in any society that does not want to become a dog eat dog world. We lost our freedom the day we believed that we can own anything,we don't even own our bodies,we die they rot away..they get old when we don't want to get old, they breakdown, and they hunger.None of us asked to be here yet we pay some rich asshole abusive POS that has way too much,to exist WTF is that?
It's true insanity.
