New to DU!!! (Please read)
“The world feels hurt
'Cause of the wars.

The world feels ashamed
'Cause of the wars.

The people don't feel
What the world feels like.”
Jill Rittmaster; 4th grader; 1968

I joined the Democratic Underground in late 2003. This was on the same day that Patrick Fitzgerald was appointed to lead the investigation of the Plame Scandal. It was also the day that Will Pitt published what I still consider to be the single best article on that scandal.

Over the years, I've had a blast participating on this forum. At times it has been pleasurable, in the sense that the vast majority of participants not only agree on an issue, but they add things from unique perspectives made possible by the nature of the internet. In my youth, we depended largely upon “underground newspapers,” and I often wonder how much more powerful the Civil rights and Anti-War movement of the 1960s and early '70s might have been with an internet.

At other times, the forum has been tense and filled with conflict. The 2008 democratic primary was a good example of that. More recently, debates – and even arguments – about the Obama administration's policies have brought a different level of acrimony to our forum. I've seen people who I like, as well as some I didn't like, leave the Democratic Underground. In general (except for “trolls”), that is a bad thing. We have a potential for benefit from having different views expressed on the pages of this forum.

How to improve the forum? Probably everyone here has asked themselves this question from time to time. One of the strengths here is the resource for news: members often report things a few days before the corporate media does. There is power in knowledge. A person can come here to find links to the best information available at any given time.

I thought that it might be both interesting and beneficial to try something new here. Rather than link an article or interview with some news-maker that's found on some other internet forum, newspaper, etc, I thought that I'd try to do some exclusive interviews for the Democratic Underground. The general idea came to me when I saw right-wing people making reference to the forum in the wake of Tucson. I decided on the first person to interview, after reading an OP posted by “madrchsod,” one of the voices on the Democratic Underground that I always think is essential to listen to.

Hence, over the past 72 hours, I've been interviewing Mark Rudd, one of the most influential participants in the youth revolt in the 1960s. This is an exclusive interview for the participants of the Democratic Underground. It is a discussion of some of the more interesting issues that we talk about on this forum, and it's aimed specifically to the Democratic Left.

If there is interest in this, it's something that I'd like to continue on the forum. Over the years, I've done a lot of interviews with people, mostly in the sport of boxing, Native American issues, and environmental crises. My hope would be that by offering such a series here, it could help to bring some discussions to a higher level …. not by “ending” arguments and differences, but by reinforcing our understanding that the Democratic Underground is the most valuable internet site for the discussion of important issues that concern the Democratic Left.

I hope to be finished with the interview, and to post it here, by the end of the day. However, those who know me have learned that I tend to talk a lot – and the opportunity to ask questions and talk with Mark Rudd is a dream come true for an old fool like me.

What do you think? Who would you like to have interviewed for the Democratic Underground? Can this “new feature” improve the tone on this forum?

Thanks!
H2O Man

11. Wow, go for it!
Are you doing these interviews online or face-to-face? Maybe you could announce the interviewee ahead of time & solicit questions from the amazing people on DU. And, while we are honored to be the recipients of your work, why not publish your interviews on other progressive sites as well?

12. This sounds very interesting, I have a request!
Edited on Mon Jan-17-11 10:37 AM by Zephie
It's not a big name request (in fact the whole point of it is to draw more attention to the issue), but I'd love to see you talk to Patrick McCollum, who is a pagan chaplain currently embroiled in a lawsuit against the state of California over religious freedoms in their prisons. California prisons currently only allow paid chaplains of Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, and Native American faiths. McCollum received many awards this year for his advancement of religious freedoms (such as the Mahatma Gandhi Award for the Advancement of Religious Pluralism), has spoken before the US Commission on Civil Rights about this issue, was a founder of the Lady Liberty League, and spoken with the Obama administration about discrimination of minority faiths.

He is also bucking heads over this issue with David Barton (a favorite of Glenn Beck and Michele Bachmann) who has stated in reference to this case that minority faiths such as Paganism "were never intended to receive the protections of the Religion Clauses".

Anyway that's my suggestion! If you want to read more on him, The Wild Hunt has done a wonderful job of blogging his efforts. http://wildhunt.org/blog/tag/patrick-mccollum

Thanks and I look forward to the series!

As to who I'd like to have interviewed, the list is long but I'll just suggest one in this reply.

President Jimmy Carter. He wasn't particularly radical in his day but by today's standards he's outright loony!

So much ground has been lost in progressive causes since his administration.

I'd love to learn his point of view on practically any topic.

The one person that I would really like to hear from is Pete Seeger.

Carlos Santana would be interesting also.

Other than the famous, I'm real curious about the new person in charge of the Pennsylvania DEP. I don't know much about him, but the PA DEP needs to radically alter how they've done things in the past. Getting comments from him on the record could be a start.

Suggestions: Robert Kennedy Jr., Van Jones, Howard Dean, Al Gore.
I think one way that you may approach these activists would be by suggesting that they may connect with more activists via this website than thru their email campaigns.

I'd like to interview people also, from the 'other side'. I am genuinely curious about why people support these wars eg and on the MSM they are never challenged, with actual facts, about what are really just talking points 'it's for national security' and 'we have to keep radical Islam under control' etc and the MSM 'news' people just nod in agreement.

If anyone who is opposed to peace, opposed to Social programs etc., would be willing to be interviewed in depth, that would be great. And of course it should done with respect.

Certainly if people are acrimonious, certainly if people are always negative.

But so many of the people that made this place a haven for me are gone now.

It really keeps me off here a lot of times too. (But of curse, that is probably the point - anyone who remembers a pre-DLC Democratic Party is not good for the current POV.)

Would it be within your grasp to interview David Souter? I'd like to hear his unvarnished perspectives about the 2000 (s)election; backroom dealings with Scalia et al; his views/recommendations for remedy on the "Citizens United" decision, etc.

99. It sounds like a terrific idea. It might even bring some of us closer together.
Which at this point in time is most needed.
This entire country needs to come closer together.

So maybe a little bit of recognition could go to those who participate in the writing/interviewing process.
Like we could have a special symbol that appears next to their name, like the mods have here.
You know, the way you can tell when a mod made a post in a thread by that little thingy they have next to their nickname.

We could call those who participate "Writers Extraordinaire", for example, and give those members a special logo to use in their threads when they start an article like that.
So new people that come to DU would know that they are not just ordinary members like me.

Huffington-Post uses a system that is similar to this to promote the members that are actively writing some decent stuff.

Wow, Mark Rudd. Talk about a blast from the past! Very cool! I think Joan Baez would be interesting to interview.

April, 2008 - Forty years ago this week, students at Columbia occupied five university buildings, including the president’s office in Low Library, to protest the school’s participation in a Defense Department think tank and a plan to build what the students called a “racist” gym in Morningside Park (neighborhood residents were to have a separate entrance). Mark Rudd, chairman of Columbia’s chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, emerged as spokesman for the protesters. A week later, when the NYPD raided the buildings and ended the takeover, more than 700 students were arrested and 150 injured. Rudd was eventually expelled. He lives now in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he retired last year as a community-college math instructor.

I believe you have the mind for it. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your ideas and offering to host interviews. Interviewing people who were eyewitnesses to recent history, and perhaps authors, botanists and naturalists, and First Nations people would be fascinating to me, but I know serendipity will provide you with what you have asked for.
