For 30 last years have the Republicans in general ever been right about anything? |
|
I can't think of one example.

The repugs I talk to just don't seem to get it. Subject gets changed, Barney Frank gets blamed for everything.

Their policy of tax cuts and catering to big business has not changed since Lincoln died. Hell, their stance on social issues has only changed in the details, but not the general theme of dictating personal morality. From the railroads to Teapot Dome to Halliburton, they have an unblemished record of cronyism and Russian-sytle capitalism.

They've been 100% correct about that, according to a whole bunch of folks right here at DU. If you can kill someone and everyone agrees that someone was very, very bad, then you've done something good that should be celebrated. Failure to be properly appreciate and celebratory are grounds for suspicion that you're not quite the right kind of American.
It's a curious thing to me, and my ideals are highly resistant to being trimmed to fit this fashion for some reason.

The fact that AFDC was fundamentally broken. Keep in mind that 30 years ago (well, a little more) the government basically set the cost of airline travel, phone calls (not to mention that you didn't own your own phone), and a whole bunch of other things; the Republicans were right that that's not a good idea (on a macro level even communists came to accept the price signal within the past 30 years).

16. Let's face historical reality: the GOP has been on the wrong side of EVERY major issue for 100 years |

at least since TR's administration. They opposed American participation in the League of Nations; their pro-Wall Street policies in the 20's produced the Great Depression; they then opposed every effort to reduce the consequences of the Depression; they opposed every New Deal reform, including Social Security, banking reform, unemployment insurance, collective bargaining; 40 hour work week; and public works; they opposed FDR's efforts to fight fascism; they opposed health expansion plans proposed by Gov. Earl Warren AND President Harry Truman; they opposed Medicare in 1965 (Ronald Reagan predicted the end of freedom over THAT one, the End of Days itself); they staunchly opposed all Civil Rights legislation, including for African Americans, women, and gays and lesbians; and they've opposed Health Care reform since at least 1935. They've played the Race Card in just about every election since Reagan's 1966 gubernatorial crusade. Oh, don't forget their creation of massive deficits through tax giveaways to the super wealthy in 1981-82 and 2001-2002. Great track record, there. They've really put their "Country First" -- as was their slogan in 2008. No doubt they'll have much to campaign on in 2012.

21. You are absolutely correct. |
|
I was re-reading Robert Caro's biography of Lyndon Johnson's early years recently, and was constantly revolted by the response of the rethugs to the Depression, their contempt for working Americans, and their vile toadying to corporate and financial interests. Of course, the sanctimonious bastards spouted the same gibberish about preserving our precious economic freedoms to exploit and impoverish as they do today. Ye gads, the more things change....

22. but Earl Warren was a Republican |

Some would argue not until the slow party purge of the late 80s to the final coupe during Bush/Cheney there were at least some Republicans that responded to the needs of Americans. Todays GOP party would consider Nixon and Reagan too liberal for them. It wasn't that long ago basic government things like treaties with Russia were not political poison to be filibustered in the house. Yet the modern republican party turns all policy votes into poison pills. The government is broken in a way it was not previously before... well since perhaps precivil war and perhaps the 1920s. Yet American voter habits haven't changes. Many Americans today are voting for political parties that simply don't operate like they use to under the assumption they do.

18. From evilgopbastards.com : |
|
Since the New Deal, Republicans have been on the wrong side of every issue of concern to ordinary Americans; Social Security, the war in Vietnam, equal rights, civil liberties, church- state separation, consumer issues, public education, reproductive freedom, national health care, labor issues, gun policy, campaign-finance reform, the environment and tax fairness. No political party could remain so consistently wrong by accident. The only rational conclusion is that, despite their cynical "family values" propaganda, the Republican Party is a criminal conspiracy to betray the interests of the American people in favor of plutocratic and corporate interests, and absolutist religious groups.

with Johnson to pass the Civil Rights laws...
The south was completely democrat back then. And to a man, they were all racists.
That's why the south went all republican after Wallace got out of the way.
