Worldwide Call For Knitters To Make Sweaters for Penguins Affected by 2011 New Zealand Oil Spill

Worldwide Call For Knitters To Make Sweaters for Penguins Affected by 2011 New Zealand Oil Spill

Skeinz, a yarn store in New Zealand is calling on knitters worldwide to make sweaters for penguins affected by the 2011 New Zealand Oil Spill. The sweaters prevent oil-soaked birds from preening (and poisoning) themselves, and keep them warm before and after they are cleaned by cleanup workers.

The Tasmanian Conservation Trust made a similar request in 2001, but instead of the 100 sweaters they asked for, they received 15,000.

8. as an avid knitter.....
I went to the Skeinz yarn store link searching for a pattern so I could help....
and it looks like they have had such a response as to not need any more at this time.
I'll check back later.

11. I looked for the pattern also
I'm glad they have plenty, but I would have certainly loved to knit for those precious little birds.

There are other charities to knit for after the Christmas gifts are done.

12. It didn't take long for them to get the sweaters they needed.
The wildlife team thanks people who have knitted and sent in jumpers to clothe recovering little blue penguins. Facility manager Dr Brett Gartrell said the rehabilitation centre has now received enough jumpers and no more were needed.

18. Not sure which I like more...
...the tuxedo or that green turtleneck. Although, I'm going to assume the turtleneck guy gets picked on a lot, but tuxedo guy can pick up the chicks. :P

19. Update...looks like they have all the swathers they need now...
Which is unfortunate, because I was really looking forward to knitting for the penguins.

Oh well.

guess I'll have to go back to making socks for the chickadees and nuthatches this winter

25. Thanks for more ideas...
I've been doing preemie caps and other baby items for the past four years or so through Care Wear.

Like most knitters, I have a sizable "stash" of spare/scrap yarns, and this is a good way to use them up and help others at the same time.

:)
