Animal rights group rescues 800 dogs from China meat trade
Thu October 20, 2011

CNN) -- Nearly 800 dogs were rescued by a Chinese animal protection group last Saturday night in the city of Zigong, in southwest Sichuan province.

The Qiming Center, an animal-rights protection group in Sichuan, pulled off the rescue. Last Friday night, a volunteer tipped off the group that hundreds of caged dogs were being loaded onto trucks in Zigong and headed to various restaurants in Southern Guangxi province. The group dispatched a team of five to block the dog-trader while they posted microblogs online calling for help from animal-loving citizens.

After a standoff and negotiation, the group agreed to pay the dog trader 83,000 yuan ($13,000) to secure the caged dog's freedom, said Qiming president Qiao Wei.

"It's a compromise we took in an effort to let the dogs free—they are visibly suffering for being packed in small cages with very limited space. We spent hours negotiating with the trader," Qiao told CNN in a phone interview. "Finally with the help of local government he was willing to hand over the dogs in exchange for 83,000 yuan—60,000 for personal compensation, another 20,000 for cages that we lack."

8. People in China don't eat dogs because the human population is too high
People in China eat dogs because their culture does not consider dog meat to be taboo.

9. From the article:
Most dogs rescued Saturday were severely dehydrated.
"Some dogs were stolen, and now their owners come to us to take back their pets.
Many would leave a certain amount of money as appreciation for our work,"

12. If your plane crashes in the mountains...

You may be food for the survivors.

you = survival :: you = dinner

Who is on a high-horse, needing to pull their head out of their ass? You responded to the OP that didn't even leave a comment about the article. Are you referring to CNN, or making assumptions about the OP, or just trying to be a dick?

BTW... I saw a bag of beef-jerky in my store - "Product of India". I think all the Hindus in India are just looking for profits too!

Just sayin'

P.S. Canine (not K9) is a species, not a race. And the "people > dogs" equation doesn't usually hold true when you are out numbered.

14. if your plane crashes in the mountains there is food other than people
your analogy falls apart before it begins.

people > animals

we're at the top of the food chain.
as far as i perceived dickishness (yes I did read some of the animals went home to their owners as long as they paid a price) I'm simply bringing reality back into the forum.

I am a FIRM believer in animal rights.
Animals should never be needlessly harmed or tortured (ever!)
Our food should be treated well until it's killed (which should be quick and painless as possible)

but I will never put an animal's life above a human's.... ok probably never.
if you made me chose between my dog and hiter, i'd choose my dog every time.

19. The analogy is sound.
A simple look into history reveals:

October 13, 1972 - Uruguayan Rugby Team, Flight 571 over Andes Mountains
1884 ,Mignonette Yacht, England to Australia
1846-1847 - The Donner Party, Sierra Nevada Mountains

Maybe if they had "Bear" Grylls with them, or You for that matter...

As for the "Top of the food chain," this only holds true in a predator-prey situation. Many humans are killed by wild and domestic animals every year. This action is an automatic demotion from the pole position, so to speak, for the victim. Looking at a larger picture, if parasites are added into the equation, they feed off of us... as do mosquitoes for that matter. An accurate depiction of the food chain is circular, and there is no top.

Reality back into the forum? The OP posted a story from CNN and left it at that; no comments; no sides; no bias. The reality is that you asserted your own comments directed at the poster, completely unwarranted. This is why I was asking if you were just trying to be a dick. Note, I asked for clarification to the intentions behind your post, for I would not want to assume.

Finally, I agree with your statements on animal cruelty and the value of human life over beast.

15. India is one of the largest Muslim countries in the world
they may only be about 10 percent of the population -- but that's 120 million. That's probably where the beef jerky comes from.

that's the cloth, muslin.

Muslim is a perfectly acceptable spelling of the religion. As is Moslem.

I don't think I've ever seen Muslum, but since they're all phonetic approximations, that might be OK too.

11. Accurate subject line: PETAphiles deprive many Chinese of their food.
But maybe this is the answer -- soak the PETAphiles blind by getting them to buy food animals they can then "free" if they wish.

13. They drop dogs alive into boiling water
Several years ago, I saw a horrific documentary on the way animals are treated in China. They showed dogs being thrown alive into boiling water and the harvesting of their fur from the dead carcasses. Cats were skinned alive and tortoises were kept by the thousands in tiny pens, being crushed by the weight of those above them. I'm sure there are animal lovers in China who are horrified too. But perhaps the government there is so gung-ho to promote wealth and business growth that they don't regulate this type of activity. Unregulated commerce, whether it's companies that pollute the air the way they do in China or ones that engage in the utmost cruelty towards animals is just plain unacceptable. We need regulation. Ohio removed its regulations under Kasich regarding the ability of entrepreneurs to keep exotic animals and that's what we got this week with the unfortunate deaths of Bengal tigers and the like.
